Aliens - Alien - This time its war.

Just finished rewatching the film (this thread among others inspired me) and would like to reiterate its brilliance.:) HuRABon, Hicks, Vasquez, Bishop, Newt and of course, Ripley - all incredible characters and each with an emotional journey to follow. Fantastic characterisation, dynamic scenes, good backstories, multiple references to the original film and the xenomorphs are as visually stunning as ever. Viewing bliss.

The thing with Alien3 though was that I could never forgive them for killing Newt. It made me feel sick to the core when watching it, especially knowing all she had gone through in Aliens, it felt like all of Aliens was a complete waste.

What did you expect them to do?

They were making a sequel to a film made 6(? maybe longer) years previously, it would have been impossible to have Newt in it as she'd been in stasis whereas the actress would have been about 19 by the time they got around to filming.

They wouldn't have been able to use a diferent Newt as fans would have flipped.

For me Newt's death was a hurdle, but forgiveable. And the later scenes were pretty good - the autopsy, Ripley exploring the prison and meeting new people, getting laid, the prison environment was good, and I especially loved the juxtaposition of the funeral speech with the alien emerging from the dog. "From death comes new life", or whatever it was. I'm talking about the original film here. I've not seen the Director's Cut. I think the first half of the original A3 is under-rated.

And then it degenerates into boring old "monsters in the air-ducts", and then it gets progressively worse the closer the movie is to its end.
