Aliens - Alien - This time its war.

Seems not. A quick google says the changes for the Aliens special edition are:
  • References about what happened to Ripley’s daughter
  • Scenes in which the colonists on the planet are sent to investigate Ripley’s claims about the alien ship whose distress signal her crew had intercepted in the original Alien movie
  • A minor subplot involving automated machine gun sentries employed by the space marines against the alien hordes

Thanks for that. I did watch the original on video a while back but couldn't recall the sentries not being in it. Good additions, though.

Incidentally, could anyone let me know whether it's worth getting the director's cuts of the four films? Or should I go straight for the Quadrilogy? I have the basic DVD releases but have heard that there's more footage out there on the others.

I love the sequel.

It would never top the original, but the sequel was out all freaking action, and the aliens were maniacal as always!

After all, "you don't see them f**king each other over a percentage" ... :) :)

My favourite film of all time.

It doesn't try to be a clone of the original like the majority of sequels, it creates an identity of its own, and in my eyes it is superior to the original. Absolutely brilliant.

Aliens is probably Jim Cameron's best ever film, although Terminator 2 was very very good, with adult hinRABight Aliens is much better.

i wonder if it's got an HD release planned? (*quickly surfs off to google*)

EDIT: Doesn't look like it :-( : EDITEND

It's a totally different kind of film to the original. It has nowhere near the depth or subtlety of the first film, and it's basically a immaturely scripted war film with the adrenaline of a shoot-em-up video game, but I still love it! :)

The nine disc super-quadrilogy box set is pretty widely available, and if you're a fan it's well worth getting I'd say, you get 2 versions of the first three films and shed loaRAB of extras.

It's worth getting and just ignoring the presence of Ressurection (I personally quite enjoyed Alien3 though).

Thanks. I'll have a browse on the net and look for some offers. I wasn't keen on either of the two later films but there's something curiously satisfying about having the complete collection together.

Agreed! It was the best way to approach a sequel IMO. The first film had done the updated "girl and the monster" movie with all the sexual predatore undertones very well - no point doing all that again. And the stuff like having an android and him turning out to be the good guy, and the alien stowing away on the ship, and the fight in the loader-suit, etc., although corny and predictable was still great fun.

The first film was a very "up close and personal" affair, while the second kept the aliens at arms length like in a video game - and that allowed a for lot of tension in the film, knowing that you didn't want them to get too close, having seen the first film! To create tension the first film relied on us not knowing what the alien was or where it was. In the second film we knew all too well what the aliens were and where they were, and the tension came from trying to keep them away. 2 very different approaches and both very successful.

I love HuRABon's quotes :

HuRABon: Hey Vasquez, have you ever been mistaken for a man?
Vasquez: No. Have you?

Is this gonna be a standup fight, sir, or another bughunt?

We're on an express elevator to hell; going down!

Well that's great, that's just f**kin' great, man. Now what the f**k are we supposed to do? We're in some real pretty sh*t now man...

*Seventeen days?* Hey man, I don't wanna rain on your parade, but we're not gonna last seventeen hours! Those things are gonna come in here just like they did before. And they're gonna come in here...

Right, right. Somebody said "alien" she thought they said "illegal alien" and signed up!

My favourite :

I'm ready, man, check it out. I am the ultimate badass! State of the badass art! You do NOT wanna **** with me. Check it out! Hey Ripley, don't worry. Me and my squad of ultimate badasses will protect you! Check it out! Independently targeting particle beam phalanx. Vwap! Fry half a city with this puppy. We got tactical smart missiles, phase-plasma pulse rifles, RPGs, we got sonic electronic ball breakers! We got nukes, we got knives, sharp sticks...
