the recent batch of live shows (late 2009 thru 04/2010) have blended the "old" Alice In Chains songs with those from Black Gives Way To Blue. They're are almost seamless in respect to sound, emotion and quality.

William does a great job with the vocals and also plays guitar which gives them something extra that hte band did not have in the late 1980's thru early 1990's.

Loving the new disc, but the songs rock even harder live. I suggest to any fan here, find a few of the recent bootlegs from the North America Tour and you'll have some fun.
 
the media sucks. im talking about the fan base. every time there's a thread about em in the mosh pit group on myspace, people go insane talking about how much they love them. i just dont get it.
 
Ya their first single off their new album 'check my brain' or 'check your brain' or whatever it is, is terrible in my opinion, very repedative and an all around boring song. I heard it on the radio the other day and the DJ before the song played was hyping it up so much, **** what a let down, seeing as though I enjoyed some of their older work.
 
Harmonies may very well be my favorite part of music. But when they're as close together as they are in whatever key they're in, Staley and Cantrell t
can really bring out what they're saying by capturing your ear. Their harmonies are easily my favorite parts of their music.
 
I think they're good. To me, the only way to describe them is Nirvana's big brother. Rooster and Would are fantastic examples of a grungy Kurt Cobain style while Man in the Box and Them Bones are songs I'd liken to Teen Spirit.
Their instrumentation is fantastic and although not that technically brilliant, I'd say they head down keith moons descriptive path of being fantastic at putting emotion into the music. Sure some it sounRAB bland at times, I don't particularly like Heaven Beside You but every band has it's average songs. The hits are numerous so it's no wonder so many people like them. Seattle owned the grunge scene and it's no suprise to see AIC come out of Seattle and make it big. Jerry Cantrell and Layne Stanley imo are fantastic song writers as well, I probably like them more than Nirvana to be honest. Though I'd have to say I like Soundgarden more than eather of the two.
 
yeah, I didn't used to like Alice in Chains in the 90's, or N.I.N. or Pink Floyd. That all changed. AIC do seem to get better with age, like Floyd or Zeppelin. Didn't know that had a new singer, I doubt he could be very good.
 
Dirt is really the only album I recall getting into. My favorite song from that album was 'Down in a Hole'. SounRAB like Facelift neeRAB another listen based on comments in this thread.
 
Definitely, I think their voices come to their peak on the MTV Unplugged album & studio speaking 'Jar of Flies'.
I dont think they were bad at doing the heavier stuff, just like you, it would have been good to have heard more acoustic based songs such as the ones from 'Jar Of Flies'.

I heard that 'Jar Of Flies' was not even originally intended for release.
They were just mucking about in a studio one day and it turned out the record company or whoever heard the songs & thought they were so good that they should be released.

I find it incredible that the best output comes from them when they are not even trying as opposed to them trying their hardest to make a great record.
This to me, shows the true natural talent that they both had.
