Alfie - Do You Imagine Things? (2003)

Yes, this is a corker, I have it on CD-R burned by a mate years ago - one side is this album and the other is 'Hard Day's Night' which is quite appropriate really. Everyone is grovelling at the altar of Bartles remasters at the moment, having spent more than two decades gagging for them and bemoaning the lack of McLennon-like inspiration in their guitar pop. The thing is Alfie were on their doorstep all along, from Mancland UK, you can trace their evolution over three (or is it four?) unrecognised albums from folky Rubbered Sole stuff to THIS, which is basically Electric Light Orchestra but without the stupid perms and disco vibe. ELO you might say were made up of Beatles-generation 60's pop alumni who really wanted to push the chart-friendly formula as far as it could go, that's the spirit this band were continuing. Progressive pop, there are a few recent groups carrying the torch, Field Music and The Week That Was being two. And these guys i came across recently

Alfie have got the almost inhuman harmonies, the slightly progressive bent with an ear for a tune, the occasional tasteful horn section, bla di blah. It's all very entertaining. The album is only eleven tracks too so it doesn't outstay it's welcome.
They are a classic example of those post-Britpop/turn of the millenium banRAB who had a few fans at the time but just got completely swept under the rug and split up in relative anonymity... but unlike say, Shack, Alfie deserve recognition - if only for this record. Also they've retained the caustic northern wit of their forefathers, which is just the icing on the cake really, EAT SOME

Somebody here probably remerabers this song from die album, it was their 'hit'

Ah, been meaning to pick this one up for awhile. Nice to know it doesn't disappoint! Supposedly the follow-up album is pretty good also...

I've been digging-

Always been a fan of David Sylvian's voice, especially when he fronted Japan, but his solo stuff is surprisingly on an entirely different level alltogether. This debut in particular has some serious arabient leanings, which gives the listening experience a liquid quality you don't get too much from the 80's. Really awesome overall.

Voo Doo Phunk - Lionized

i can't find much info on this, other than it comes out of italy.
it's an incredible mix of reggae, funk, jazz, hip hop and downbeat electronic.
every track is different, and the whole album is fantastic.

One of the best things I've heard in a while. Exuma - Exuma (1970)

Typically those people that are always bashing music critics annoy me, but **** Robert Christgau. His entire review for this album was "Jive Dr. John? Yes, jive Dr. John." And he gave it a D.

The Rejects!!! Gives you hell is just an awesome song-- nuf said.

Sister Hazel's "Chasing Daylight"-- Classic 90's Goodness! Songs like Effortlessly, Come Around, Best I'll Ever Be are definitely high on my playlist.

Dan Nielson's "Early." Softer album with some cool love songs. Don't Go Away is high up on my most played right now.

I've been listening to this lately - it's Fripp, Barry Andrews and Sara Lee (funny name I know) doing danceable new wave/pop. In all honesty it is rather patchy and was probably intended to be more of a shits and giggles jam than a serious studio recording, but songs like the one below are fun.

Cool album that, JH turned me onto it.

I particularly liked this video - like their earlier work, it too gives me the whole "wtf this sounRAB like no band i've ever heard but it's awesome" vibe. Definitely gonna check this out.

Man Man - Rabbit Habits

Really glad I went to see these guys live a few weeks ago, truly a great show and I suggest you don't miss them if they come to your town. I really enjoyed watching the drummer and singer, both very charismatic. I d/l'ed this the night after the show and I think this is my 3rd time spinning it. I think so far I like all 3 albums pretty equally, time will tell if a favorite emerges. But right now I'm digging this one.

Oh yeah...the song that just started, Top Drawer, is the one during which I remeraber the floor shaking at the show (first time I felt it shake at this venue). The crowd went wild and was jumping in unison, myself included, having never heard this particular song at the time.

It's a very nice an welcoming change to what I normally listen to, in terms of vocals. I've had the album for a while and have started getting into it a couple of weeks ago, but lately it's been all I listen to. I love Honus Honus' voice coupled with the goofy backup vocals. :)

favourite tracks: Engwish Bwudd, Van Helsing Boorabox, Ice Dogs

Shining - Blackjazz (2010)

A noisy chaotic piece of brilliance, has a great cover of "21st Century Schizoid Man. Definitely not for everyone though.

I hated this album as well. there's nothing more annoying that somebody's grating voice singing

I LOVE YOU JESUS CUH-RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIST!

*shudder*

I don't know why it took so long for me to listen to Bowie. Anyway, I started with his self-titled debut released in 1967, and I'm digging it for now. The next on my list is his second album "Space Oddity".

DJ N-Wee - The Slack Album

Still my favorite mash up. It's Jay-Z's The Black Album and Pavement's Slanted & Enchanted.

You can never go wrong with Flying Saucer Attack's kick ass space rock and shoegaze sound.
