Albums You're Digging II

Soft Machine- Third (1970)

As far as I am concerned this is like a tonic, I need to hear it every so often to stay healthy and sane(ish). Robert Wyatt will always be my favourite prog 'character'.

The Chrysanthemums - Little Flecks Of Foam Around Barking (1988)

For those who don't know Barking is in East London, where this was recorded by Yukio Yung (aka Terry Burrows, successful author of instructional guitar manuals including Dorling Kindersley's 'K.I.S.S. Guide to Playing Guitar' which I used to have) and Alan Jenkins of new wave/post-punk greats Deep Freeze Mice.
It's a sprawling, knowingly self indulgent, homegrown concept double LP of psychedelic prog-pop and just about everything in between, with tape manipulations added by mail correspondence from unsung genius R. Stevie Moore.

Yeah, it's mainly for the title song, but have been cranking this on overdrive since it came up on Saturday Night Rage (Local music show in which a musician chooses the music over a 3-4 hour period, normally has some classics). Love the breakdown @ ~4:30. Great clip by Cunningham as well.

Transatlanticism - Death Cab for Cutie - I defy anyone to tell me this isn't a great wonderful emotional journey of an album, scattered with road trip references, failed relationship anecdotes, unrequited loves, heartbreak... it's such a complete little album, and it's definitely a big favorite of mine, and will be for some time to come...

Don't get me wrong, I love Murmur (I rated it a 10/10 in my discography thread for chrissakes ) but I think you're giving it a tad too much credit. Murmur takes tremendous influence from two relatively unknown and very notable recorRAB, The Feelies' "Crazy Rhythms" (1980) and fellow Athens Georgia band Pylon's "Gyrate" (1980). These two recorRAB really laid the foundations for the 80s college rock movement and were arguably the first of the genre (which of course was spearheaded by R.E.M.).

Check em out if you like.

In my mind, Animals is most definitely the best Floyd album. The themes are brilliant along with the lyrics, and it has some of the best sound in the discography.

Exactly what I thought! I was expecting a trainwreck, and instead I got a terrific listen.

I've been revisiting Nick Cave as well... I love this album to bits and I've listened to it 3 times today. Is this not the greatest song ever?

Steely Dan-Pretzel Logic
Not as good as Aja, but a terrific album of 2-3 minute pop songs nonetheless, with Through With Buzz, Any Major Dude Will Tell You and Night By Night being every bit as good as the more famous Steely Dan hits.

Psychic TV/PTV3 - Alien brain vs Maggot Brain

new Ep consisting of two 13 minute tracks....a perfect exploration of creepy late 60s psychedelic rock with of course a bit of Genesis P-Orridge style singing...seriously this is one of the best things they've done in some years....a must for fans long early Pink Floyd influence psychedelic rock

The Fall:
Hex Enduction Hour

...Wow. I had a compilation of The Falls that got me into them, I picked up "Saving Grace", which is kind of overrated and tough to listen to (although I like it), but this is great. This is the album I wanted to hear from The Fall, one that I can listen to front to back without too many low points.
Righteous Jams: "The Classical", "Hip Priest", "Winter"

The Soft Boys
Underwater Moonlight

This is really great as well, I've known "I Wanna to Destoy You" for a while, and to tell you the truth Ive been meaning to pick this up for a year-and-a-half or so. Im really glad I did, one of those albums with just enough songs you like on the first listen to make you put it on again, and each listen uncovers another track you really like. I think "Tonight" is the best song on here. They have really excellent backup vocals, showcased wonderfully in "Tonight". This may just compel me to delve into Robyn Hitch****'s solo work. ReminRAB me sort of like a poppier, less technical Television.
Righteous Jams: "I Wanna Destroy You", "Tonight", "I Got The Hots"

Jay Reatard
Blood Visions
I've been on a huge Jay Reatard kick lately, and this completes his discography for me, his first album. It might be my favorite, this is the record I always wanted The Adverts to make. He sounRAB just like them, only faster and the melodies are stronger. He even covers their song "We Who Wait", and you can really hear the similarities. "Fading All Away" is one of the best songs I've heard all year. Not longwinded either, only 1/2 hour of music over 15 tracks, and if there's one thing I love, its short songs. Its the only thing I like better than long songs.
Righteous Jams: "Death Is Forming", "Fading All Away", "Nightmares"

Loving this, I had to download this after I read Jackhammer's description, Lateralus came up with the gooRAB. Quirky folksy stuff, Tom Waits is a decent comparison, but the vocals are so lovely and animated that I prefer it to most of his stuff.
