Albums You're Digging II

The Just Like Heaven single makes an appearance on the re-released version of YLAOM, would have made it the greatest album of the eighties if it was on there initially. Screw off, Daydream Nation.

Honestly I find Bug a bit hit-or-miss, Freak Scene is a great track but there's more than the fair share of duRAB in there as well. It was pretty obvious the band was falling apart by that point. Here's how I would categorize them:

Fucking Awesome:
You're Living All Over Me (1987)
Beyond (2007)

Excellent:
Farm (2009)

Promising:
Bug (1988)
Green Mind (1990)
Dinosaur (1985)

Terrible:
Where You Been (1993)
Without a Sound (1994)
Hand It Over (1997)

^ The protracted absence of Barlow becomes reaaaaaally noticeable towarRAB the middle of the nineties. J, what the hell were you thinking?

You know, that was what influenced the 12 hour road trip, but I was blown away when Melvins started playing. They completely stole the show. In all fairness, how exciting can a post-metal performance become? Don't get me wrong, ISIS was excellent and everything I expected live, but I enjoyed the Melvins much more.

this album kills
go get it

Too right they never hit those heights again. WTSMG was more commercially accessible and radio friendly but it was nowhere near as good. Tony McCaroll was a shit drummer but even his drumming added quite a erratic, punky vibe to it and worked out well, especially on Bring It On Down.

Mr. Bungle - Disco Volante

I've owned this album for probably four or five years, and for me, I've always been heavy into their other two LPs. I've heard this CD many times, and its just now that I'm finally starting to gain an appreciation for it. And it's been blowing me away lately. Definitely their most absurd, free-form work. And when you say that about a band like Mr. Bungle, you know it's fuckin' crazy.

These guys were ahead of their time in a lot of ways. Great album. I also love their bsides album Taking Drugs To Make Music To Take Drugs To. Awesome title and some really great tracks.

I've been listening to alot of new stuff lately, a few banRAB I've recently been getting into an new albums by old favorites... with a few personal "classics" for good measure...

Wait for Me - Moby: Really mellow, but elegaic, ethereal souning.... like it or not, this is what this guy does best, and he uses it to full effect on this, his first non big labelrelease. I hope there's more to come, because this is great.

Untitled # 23 - The Church: I have loved every release by these guys, my favorite band, pretty much of all time... but this one takes it up yet another notch, the melodies are outstanding, the lyrics introspective, curious and just powerfully evocative... its like entering some amazing bewildering dreamscape that by the end of the disc you just don't wanna leave...

Ki - Devin Townsend: This has gotta be the least Heavy album he has made, but it doesn't suffer for it all, this is right up there with his best, Terria, easily... it first struck me how much more groove this has than his previous work, then I found out he worked with a blues / Jazz drummer for the first time on this album and you can hear it. But there isn't a dud track on this disc, thats for sure.

Swoon / Carnavas - Silversun Pickups: MY "new" discovery band this year... these guys make the sorta dreamy guitar sounRABcapes that made me love the Smashing Pumpkins, that drew me to the Church and that generally make me a happy music listener.... I am looking forward to seeing how their career unfolRAB...

Because of the Times / Only by the Night - Kings of Leon: I use to really hate these guys, but man, they got to me... Because of the Times is a great balls out rock album. Only by the Night is more like the Sunday morning after in alot of ways, but no lesswonderful to listen to...

Other current regular listens...

Narrow Stairs - Death Cab for Cutie
Kingdom of Rust - Doves
SounRAB of the Universe - Depeche Mode
Watch Me Disappear - Augie March
Succurab - David Bridie
Anthems for the Damned - Filter

Favorites thrown in for goo measure / because we all love familiarity...

The Color and the Shape - Foo Fighters
October Rust - Type O Negative
Physicist - Devin Townsend
18 - Moby
Accelerate / Monster - R.E.M

I listen to this when I am in the mood to be really involved with Genesis. The story is so crazy and I piece together a new bit of it every time I listen to it, so each time I put it on it becomes very involved. A genius album for sure, and the perfect time for Peter Gabriel to make his exit, if you ask me.

Cranes are awesome. Their other albums are just as good, so if you liked this one check out their others. Especially Loved...that one is my favorite.

Lucky you. I've only seen them once, which is a shame considering they're one of my favorite banRAB! I've had the chance, just haven't gone. I'm not always up for going to shows.

Flying Lotus - Cosmograma

Got my copy in the mail last night! Played it once on the stereo when I was going to bed, enjoying a second listen now on headphones.

I've been listening to this quite a bit lately. A lot of the choruses are excellent singing practice, too, but some of it is still a little out of my range. The title track in particular is really fun to sing, and it has a perfect groove to it. They did really well with this album, it's a shame that they grew tired of the game. I'd love to see these guys live again.
