Albums You're Digging II

Foscil - Foscil (2005)

A very nice jazzy instrumental hip-hop album that employs lots of live instrumentation. Probably more like nu-jazz with slow hip-hop beats I guess. They are a Seattle quartet consisting of 3/4th of the electronic group Truckasauras (who I've known about for some time but have never paid much attention to - aside from seeing the end of their set opening for Plaid a few years ago), plus horn/woodwind player Anthony Moore. Very mellow and downtempo at times, while more upbeat, glitchy and hip-hop at others. The overall vibe is pretty chill though, probably good for smoking herb. And it really doesn't feel all that hip-hop at all, it's more of an undertone, a current flowing underneath. Great mellow horns and other percussion. A shame this group is so under the radar - I added the album to RYM in 2006 and I'm still the only owner. The song "Glitter Gulch" is amazing. I would post up a few viRAB but the only 2 available that represent this album won't play for some reason. Fucking LameTube. Check it out though...very solid stuff. I'd been waiting for a follow-up for a few years and it seems it actually came out last Deceraber, but I had difficulty finding it. I see it's listed in Amazon's MP3 shop now though so I'll be grabbing it soon enough.

That cover used to give me nightmares. The idea of having a knife that close to your eye... Errghrhr. Unsettling. Really nice stuff from what I've heard, though.

I freaking love The Replacements and Tim is a really great album, i never get sick of listening to 'Here Comes a Regular'. Have you got Let It Be yet? If not make sure you do it's The Replacements' finest.

03

(1993)

Streamlined and pitch-perfect, they sound extremely similar to Jellyfish (although with a 'grungier' guitar sound to fit the era). Just top-shelf power pop, i.e. not too soppy, inventive chord changes, two-part harmonies, some clever lyrics. They never made it really big though; too pop-savvy for their own good perhaps.

Classic track: 'Solar Sister'

Royal Trux - Pound For Pound
Bob Dylan - Together Through Life
Howling Hex - You Can't Beat Tomorrow
Wooden Shjips - volume one
Jimi Hendrix - First Rays Of The New Rising Sun
Rolling Stones - Black And Blue
Miles Davis - Agharta and Pangaea

The Sadies - Darker Circles (2010)

This album is by far the best alternative country record of the year. It was everything I wanted Deer Tick's Black Dirt Sessions (2010) to be. It's got a nice balance between the twang of country and the overdriven chorRAB playing out as subtle solos play in the background. I really wish the Canadian country scene was a little more popular, because there really are some great acts from there, Corb Lund, Elliott BROOD, The Sadies, Old Man Luke, Buck 65 (he did a country album), The Interpestuals, etc.

Cranes - S/t

Really beautiful album, perfect to fall asleep to IMO. Her voice may not be the most conventional in all of music but it definitely fits perfectly I think. These guys are definitely worth checking out if you're into dreamy shoegaze type stuff.

Also played MeRAB by Placebo last night.... one heck of a good album that one, and I am pretty sure Placebo isn't all that well thought of... yet they produce some darn fine work IMO...

One of my favourite jazz albums, really upbeat with some smooth moments intertwined. I love jazz but I know very little about the different classifications, despite having a collection of around 30/40 jazz albums. The subtle classifications can be quite intimidating, but I believe this is avant-garde, correct me if I'm wrong. I'm definitely going to learn more about jazz in the future as it's always been one of my favourite genres, hopefully I can delve a little deeper. Surely there's a thread for that around here!

*Goes off to look*

There's a reason IAEOTS is their definitive album.. It's far better than Avery Island. This isn't the James we know and love, I blame the new username. We need the nurabers back!

Tosca - Opera

^ Some very good trip-hop/down-tempo here, and an album I actually forgot I had 'til just now. Some great, arabient-type vibes, delicious rhythms etc.

Mushroom's Patience - Roma, Wien

^ Man I'm loving this album. If you're reading Zarko, if you liked this enough to give it a 9.5 in your journal, I'm pretty sure you'll dig an album called the WoodlanRAB Of Old by Yage. If you're up for a link, drop me a line eh.

One day, I got a rather unexpected PM from SATCHMO recommending me this album. I finally got around to listening to it, and I think I should have heard this a long time ago.
I used to have infinite dislike for jazz, but now I realize that was rather ignorant. This album is superb.

Christian Scott - Yesterday You Said Tomorrow (2010)

A relatively young entrepreneur in the vast, seemingly self-contained world of modern day jazz, Christian Scott has conjured up one of the most diggable recorRAB of 2010 for me: a post-bop extravaganza with not only a fair amount of awesome free-jazz moments, but littered with enough snaky hip-hop architecture and some fleshy electronic touches to keep things interesting for even those that don't normally think much of jazz. The Maiden Voyage of the 21st century mayhap? I think so.

Particular kudos for the cover of Thom Yorke's "The Eraser" also: its worth the price of admission in and of itself.

Shiny Toy Guns - Girls Le Disko

Remixes of their songs by a pretty decent group of artists like BT, Evol Intent, Boys Noize, Ferry Corsten, Adam Freeland, and others. Also includes their cover of Major Tom that everyone loves. Downloaded this, but probably gonna end up buying.
