Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti - Underground (2007)

I've given Ariel Pink a hard time in the past, dismissing him as an R.Stevie Moore wannabe (minus the songwriting talent) and analogue hipster variously... but the last couple of months i dun a 180. He's not lacking in appeal or songwriting ability (quite the opposite), he's just remarkably inconsistent - all the albums i've heard are made up of unrealised or flawed experiments punctuated by nostalgic pop greats beamed through time on a dodgy transistor signal...
'Underground' is an exception, being the closest Ariel Pink gets to a great album that i have heard. It still has that untainted, un-produced arabience that attracts people to his music, it's just much more consistent. You'll still find yourself skipping a few tracks; but this is the point as Pink (a la the original home recordist RSM) is a warts-and-all, impulsive artist, opening up the recording process to us. And being near-improvised, resolutely demo-quality songwriting, the results are always going to be mixed; but when he hits his stride it's beautiful to behold.
Not for everybody, there are people that will be left scratching their heaRAB and berating the aesthetics, hiss, compression... and to them i say: good, who neeRAB ya

John Metcalfe – Darker Sunset

Genre? Couldn't tell you. Sometimes it's Classical, sometimes it's Electronica, sometimes it's Jazz, sometimes it's everything. Fantastically eclectic, just the way I like it. Definitely need to review this one.

I know what you mean exactly. Around sophomore year of college, I started listening to arabient/electronic/instrumental stuff just so I could work and listen to music. It isn't too much of an issue, since there is some truly excellent instrumental music out there. But, as you said, it used to be all about the lyrics. It wasn't until really recently that I managed to start paying more attention to them again (and as a result finding some banRAB I really love).

Gish is excellent, I do agree. I really wish the Smashing Pumpkins had remained broken up, since their music (or Billy's, I should say) has definitely hit a vibe that feels like, well, there is experience behind it but it is just boring as ****. Ending with Machina/Machina II was the perfect way for them to end. It isn't too popular with most people, but I personally loved those albums a lot. There is such progression and growth in their music over the years. Should have been done.

Meh...you got me on an SP rant again.

Woven hand - The Threshing Floor

i've had it for some time now...listened to it and thought it was not that good....but now it is becoming one of my favorite Woven hand albums

There's Subterranean Modern, but it only compiled The Residents, Tuxedomoon, Chrome and MX-80 Sound. Oh yeah there's one more compilation also from Ralph Rec that has Snakefinger and Renaldo and the Loaf on it, two more great acts. But, I was thinking of some new, more extensive compilation that would focus on lesser known banRAB.

Camel - Mirage (1974)

I've really been expanding my prog rock collection in the last few weeks, but this is an album that really captivated me. After listening to this album I see who influenced Opeth's progressive elements.

The Move - Shazam (1970)

early '70s guitar-driven rock pretending to be mid-sixties psychedelia pretending to be completely awesome. and that's what it is. with an album cover like that, how could you resist? :D

Tom Waits - Bone Machine
Just incredible... incredible lyrics, incredible voice, incredible tunes. This is the only Waits album I have unfortunately.. i need more.

A Silver Mt. Zion - He Has Left Us Alone...
Depressing and arabient, great daydreaming soundtrack. This is probably my favourite Silver Mt. Zion album.

Ozzy Osbourne - Blizzard of Ozz
Classic album, Love it.. nuff said. Every single song is a classic

Brian Eno - Music for Airports
Hard to explain why I like it.. when I have it playing I barely even notice that it's playing but it just makes the environment seem so peaceful and relaxing.. :)

The weird thing is I was out 'til about 3am as well. If I can stay awake 'til a reasonable time, I guess that's my sleeping pattern fixed again :D

Nick Cave is one of the absolute best without a doubt though. He's probably another one of my most listened-to artists over the last 7 or 8 years, or however long I've been listening to what I'd call decent music (long before I started my LastFM account then). It's a real shame that discography thread that was started about him went under - it's pretty tempting to start a new one at this rate...

I loved loved loved it.

I'm on something of a Damon Albarn binge, after listening to Demon Days, and now setting into this.Better than I expected even if he should have done more with the rhythm section at his disposal.

The Good,The Bad And The Queen

Even though I consider The Real Thing and Angel Dust their real classics, I tend to listen to King for a Day... and Album of the Year more often. I guess that's partly because I played the other two so much, and these still have catching up to do. Plus production-wise they're just more listenable. Well Angel Dust isn't bad, but The Real Thing is in desperate need of a remaster, IMO.

Louis Armstrong & Duke Ellington - The Complete Sessions
albumcoverLouisArmstrong-DukeEllington-TheGreatSummit-CompleteSessions-DeluxeEdition.jpg

I've been out and about working on various stuff, looking at flats and playing football all day. This is the perfect album to wind down after all that to. Jazz is something I've only recently started properly getting into, and stuff like this makes me wonder why on earth I didn't think of doing so earlier.
