nobody had anything to say about the 'cocks? You're all rubbish
great, this was one of the first albums i got via rab possibly, courtesy of Hackjammer. this and the 'laugh' compilation are all the killing joke i think i'll ever need tbh..
anyway
Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti - Underground (2007)
I've given Ariel Pink a hard time in the past, dismissing him as an R.Stevie Moore wannabe (minus the songwriting talent) and analogue hipster variously... but the last couple of months i dun a 180. He's not lacking in appeal or songwriting ability (quite the opposite), he's just remarkably inconsistent - all the albums i've heard are made up of unrealised or flawed experiments punctuated by nostalgic pop greats beamed through time on a dodgy transistor signal...
'Underground' is an exception, being the closest Ariel Pink gets to a great album that i have heard. It still has that untainted, un-produced arabience that attracts people to his music, it's just much more consistent. You'll still find yourself skipping a few tracks; but this is the point as Pink (a la the original home recordist RSM) is a warts-and-all, impulsive artist, opening up the recording process to us. And being near-improvised, resolutely demo-quality songwriting, the results are always going to be mixed; but when he hits his stride it's beautiful to behold.
Not for everybody, there are people that will be left scratching their heaRAB and berating the aesthetics, hiss, compression... and to them i say: good, who neeRAB ya
