Albums You're Digging II

sonic_youth_daydream_nation.jpg

I'd never listened to Sonic Youth before but one of my ex-girlfrienRAB went on about them SO much that I thought I'd invest in a discography. Because I just am that CRAZY when it comes to music. However, the discography was a bit intimidating and I didn't know where to start, so the power of the internet pointed me towarRAB Daydream Nation as the most accessible for the first time listener. Even though I find it laughable that this is supposed to be Sonic Youth's 'accessible' album, what with all the noise rock and feedback and the like, it's still pretty brilliant. Not as great as I was expecting from all the hype and their extreme cult fanbase, but it's still an inspirational listen.

Hey Joni

Relistening to the song now, can't say it sounRAB too familiar but I can definitely see it working well for REM. I may have a digital copy of Dead Letter Office, I'll check when I get home. I think I remeraber ripping it from our office CD collection a few years ago.

It's funny I loved that album last year but I hated the vocals. The music was already haunting and depressive enough, the vocals were a little overkill for me. In fact I remeraber trying to find a program where I could separate all the tracks from each other and remove the vocals and just leave it as instrumentals.

I like the sound of this one!

GUITAR WOLF-UFO ROMANTICS

Some dirty, punky, filthy rock from Japan. Nice!

CARTER USM-WORRY BOrab

You either loved them or hated them. 3 chord riRAB banged out over a drum machine whilst 2 cockney geezers belted out their sardonic view of England. I love them!

I severely disliked this album when I first got it. 'Reggae-core' just did'nt seem to live up to it's name. However it has insidiously crept up on me and has been played a few times at work this week.

CLINT MANSELL-THE FOUNTAIN

To go from electro grebo student rock to subliminal film scoring is a fantastic achievement for Mr. Mansell. Brilliant and understated score.

I dug out a bunch of CRAB I don't think I've listened to in well over a decade.

Mock all you like, I bet I had more fun listening to this than you did listening to all your po-faced indie-folk dreck.

The New Order - Declaration Of War

Band put together by Ron Asheton of The Stooges and Dennis Thompson of MC5 after those banRAB split up. Lead singer is a dead ringer for Bon Scott. The songs range from sounding like Stooges & MC5 stuff to AC/DC like stuff with a bit of 70s trad rock thrown in. Some of the lyrics are cheesy as hell ( "We are the Rock n Roll soldiers in the war against the jive ), but it's a fun album.

Tokyo Sex Destruction - Black Noise Is The New Sound

Spanish retro garage rock. Not original in the slightest but I don't really care when it comes to stuff like this.

Telstar Ponies - In The Space Of A Few Minutes

Hugely under-rated band who I am surprised are not more widely liked on this forum , seeing as they mix what's now known as post rock with krautrock , folk & noise. An odd corabination but they manage to pull it off.

S*M*A*S*H - S*M*A*S*H* E.P

Pre Britpop new wave of new wave which was basically just a movement of banRAB inspired by the Clash and didn't sell any recorRAB. The politics are totally laughable but it's done with a naive charm and energy that make it appealing. And it's good to listen to some of the stuff I used to like as an impressionable teen from time to time.

Does Karen O remind anyone else of Iggy Pop, or is that just me?

LITE - Phantasia

I'm really liking this one, I've played it 3 times so far. I don't remeraber how I discovered it but searched here and Jackhammer had posted about it in the past. Anyway it's instrumental rock, most would call it math rock. It's got some post rock tendencies as well, but mostly it's energetic math rock. Think Russian Circles, but faster and more upbeat. Think Battles, without the stupid vocals. Think Rumah Sakit, and add more melody. These guys are incredibly tight and don't let their skills turn into wanking. It's a very well paced and melodic album played by very skilled Japanese musicians. This is their second album and I've picked up their debut which I might play today.

Broken Bells - Broken Bells

This really is quite enjoyable. It might seem a bit too simplistic at first (at least some songs) but they're all sinking in nicely. Actually I was impressed even the first time I played it, aside from the two I'd already heard (one I wasn't too hot about initially, Vaporize), but I wasn't sure how it would all feel down the road. I'm happy to say it's doing well overall, here on my 4th or 5th listen.

The xx - xx

It's great, I never bothered with it before because I thought synthy stuff really wasn't my thing but this album is great. So chilled out with great lyrical content.
