I think I'm finally realizing the appeal to the first wave of British psychedelia. It's my first real encounter with the Small Faces, anyway. :
The Jam - Sound Affects (1980)
I really wish more more punk albums grabbed me like this one. Not as raw as some, but with more balls and energy than London Calling could muster. Probably on par with Machine Gun Etiquette, from my standpoint.
I wouldn't really count STP either, but that album was while they were still pandering to the Grunge crowd and before their god-awful post-grunge watered-down Rolling Stones phase.
Of the ones I've heard this is definitely the most melodic/accessible, so I like it too. The next on my list is Dirty which I downloaded a few weeks ago and will likely play this coming week.
I've been all over this album recently. Think about the Smiths with a bit more dreampop injected into them. Oh, and an incredibly sexy sounding female singer. Sound awesome? Probably because it is.
Ghost - Opus Eponymous
I don't know how to explain this album. Its like a doomy-psychedelic rock record with some poppy tendencies. Anyway, if you're a fan of doom metal or psychedelic rock or just open minded towarRAB whatever I suggest this album. It was just released this year and is no doubt one of my favorite albums of the year. The songs just get stuck in my head and play over and over.
As far as I know, this is Thunders' only other genuine solo album of original material other than the awesome So Alone. It's good - one or two great songs (like the below for example) which fuse punk rock, 50s rock 'n' roll and soul/r'n'b nicely, but some of it's a bit unspectacular. Still worth having though.
^ That is the only Rise Against album I don't have and haven't heard. From the songs I've heard, I think they've blended in too much with the mainstream. I'm sure it's still better than many out there, though.
