Albums You're Digging II

Leaders of the New School - A Future Without A Past... (1991)

Lest we forget, this is where Busta Rhymes started (see above right) and is one of the lesser-know Native Tongues-affiliated groups, so you think you know what to expect lyrically, and you'd be right - just delivered with more humour.
But whereas Black Sheep surprised you with harsh lyrical content, LOTNS' first album catches you off guard by basically 'doing a Pharcyde' a good year before the fact, and very well too.
This basically spells: unhinged, cartoonish, funk/soul-based hip-hop all delivered at a pace.
They did one album after this before splitting up and none of the non-Busta merabers did anything memorable thereafter, despite delivering that essential B-boy group dynamic on this album (i.e. the deep-voiced one, the high-pitched one, the zany one, synchronised rhymes etc).

Think Brand Nubian with a sense of humour, or the Jungle Brothers on a Pharcyde psychedelic tip - but more of an amphetamine high than a sluggish opium one. A Future Without A Past.. is one of many front-to-back classics from this era and has been unfairly overlooked in favour of the equally-great Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde IMO.
Would recommend checking out if you're also a fan of KMD's Mr. Hood, Beastie Boys or the nonsense-speak of Das Efx - it's all on the same energetic consciousness vibe.

Yeah Yoni's pretty much the shit. Sometimes I feel like a one man WHY? hype machine on this site, but I'm glad to hear you like it! Elephant Eyelash is just as amazing lyrically.. without nearly as much 'sort of is, sort of isn't' genre mixing. I'd suggest checking it out if you haven't already.

I always need to hear one album like this a year, last year it was Bill Callahan, this year Strand Of Oaks. Such beautiful, natural sounding, slow folk. Just gorgeous.

(2005)

My favourite album of theirs by quite a margin, although I ain't heard the last one. I had difficulty listening to the album (esp. 'Someone's In the Wolf') for years after a dodgy SOLO mushroom experience whilst listening to it, I would get a stomach ache whenever I heard it.

'Little Sister' is one of their best singles EVUH

Bamnan and Slivercork...Midlake

This is my favourite Midlake album. I love ll the quirky noises, the little world that the songs build up in my head. Its all so innocent.

Favourite tracks...

'Some of them are superstitious', 'Anabel.'

Wincing the Night Away...The Shins

The Shins can do no wrong in my eyes....I love their sound.

Favourite tracks...

'Turn on me'... There are a few songs in The Shins whole collection that
seem to follow the theme of shattered frienRABhip and the bitterness that follows. This is one of them which really hits a chord with me.

'Australia'...The lyrics contradict the bouncy, happy sound.

Can anyone tell me how to put the album covers up....is it a matter of cut and paste from an online shopping site?

Nah it can't be that simple.

Listening to Ghosts I - IV by NIN right now... very interesting stuff! Very much enjoying the quite mellow, broody but quite atmospheric sound... definitely something that will bear repeated listens...
