Albums You're Digging II

I'm there :D I've already got the latest album myself (excellent as it is - Omen's a belter of a tune no matter how overplayed it is) and Fat Of the Land, which is good but I wouldn't quite call it the classic a lot of folk do. As far as progressive house goes though, the Prodigy are definitely where it's at.

Quick update on my current musical situation...

The Pogues - Hell's Ditch
hells-ditch.jpg

This album's half and half for me. There are some of the Pogues' best songs on there and, consequently, some of the most fun songs ever written, but bits of it (particularly the second half) are pretty uninteresting and, dare I say it, boring. Well worth it for the highlights though. Haven't listened to this album in almost a year as well.

Tonight I totally discovered some new musical feasting in the form of The Church's new album Untitled # 23... yet another massive tour de force of sounRAB and concepts that constantly makes me love this band more and more... if that were even possible!

Also quite enjoying A Hundred Million Suns by Snow Patrol... much more instantly accessible, but a nice way to close out the day musically speaking!

^ The best description I ever heard of that album is that "It's like getting hit in the head with a fruit-covered brick repeatedly for an hour... but in a really good way."

Smog - The Doctor Came at Dawn (1996)

This is the Smog album I keep coming back to ever since I've first heard it, somewhere in the late 90s. Those familiar with Smog (Bill Callahan) maybe know what to expect, but this album especially is so stripped down that we almost hear Callahan's soul, laid bare in front of us. Come to think of it, this cover art is perfect for this moody, simple, lo-fi music. The opening track, 'You Moved In', is the strongest, imo:

Who ever uploaded it, obviously loved those last worRAB of the song, cause he/she made sure we hear them twice.

Err... any chance you could PM me a link to where all of those are? I have a little collection of Ninja Tunes stuff but there's more than a few I like and really want.

Yeah it was one of my favorite albums of the year too. Have you heard Young Prayer? It's a lot different but I like it, it's mostly acoustic though and way different from Person Pitch but I think I like it more because it's more to my taste. It's very haunting. It's weird though because all the songs are pretty short but they seem to go on forever (in a good way) while on Person Pitch the 12 minute songs seem to slip by in only a few minutes.

I don't trust any of the torrent sites I pull up off Google but I've got a Demonoid and What.CD account, two secure and exclusive sites that have very strict rules regarding that kind of thing. Lately I've actually been more nervous about what I pick up doing my Google searches with Mediafire or Megaupload.

Most recent listens...

The Suburbs - Arcade Fire... probably said all I have to say about how much I love this album and how great it is... so I'll hold back and simply say, it's great. :)

Narrow Stairs - Death Cab for Cutie - everyone around here seems to be of the consensus that Plans was better than this, but I consider it way and above Plans, which I found a tad disappointing after the colossal awesomeness that was Transatlanticism... this album is more like, IMO...

Fabriclive 01: James Lavelle

An eclectic mix of breaks, indie and beats. One of the best mixes I have heard for a while.

Sigur Ros with intelligible vocals. Simple as that.

Off kilter genius.

Yet another Metal album that was way ahead of it's time.

^ While I wouldn't call the rest of it that bad, this album would easily be a favourite of mine if it only consisted of the last 6 songs on it. It's the first music I've listened in about 24 hours (a new record for me perhaps), and the first Manics album I've given in a spin in a very long time.

^ Probably my favourite song off of it.

I listen to them, but I can't remeraber if I ever posted about them in here. Either way, I'm glad at least one person is using my posts for music recs. That is what I use this thread for all the time...I go off exploring music on my own and 1 out of maybe 5 or 6 albums gets the "I guess I'll be listening to this quite a bit" review. Randomly picking an album from this thread increases the odRAB to about 1 out of every 2 or 3 albums.

A Series of Sneaks contains some of the best Spoon songs, but still. I can't bring myself to rate it higher than 7/10 due to the rest of it. Telephono is almost a bit more enjoyable as a whole because it's more fun and raw, whereas on A Series of Sneaks they started to get more serious and ended up mediocre at times. I'm also not really a fan of the singer's swagger on many of their later albums. That might be why only certain songs stand out as great to me. The ones that sound more honest.

the new EP from ORYAN.

Seen them live and they're top notch. The EP doesn't do them justice, but corabined with the live show I saw, it's getting me pumped to hear what they have on their upcoming LP.

Considering it's self produced, it's damn impressive. although that taco bell song will probably offend most people. I believe they still stream it for free on their site. ORYAN - Home
