Albums You're Digging II

Thom's writing is a lot more subtly beautiful than Bono's, which relies on a lot of (blech) Christian imagery and Smiths-y proclamations of love. The chorus of All I Need is beautiful, because the way Thom proclaims his love in that song is so Un-U2 that it's ironic how similar the songs are stylistically.

Mining old CRAB in your collection is great fun, you rediscover some old beauties.... personally through doing that I have rediscovered a couple ofundiscovered Australian indie rock gems:-

Hello Halo - Pollyanna

Rocks on the Soul - Screamfeeder

It's a top album eh. I love all the soul and r'n'b elements that they throw in as well. It'd be one of my favourites from the guy if it was a) by him alone and b) didn't have a couple of pretty boring space-fillers on it as well.

Shad - TSOL (2010)

Hip-hop has been my neglected genre this year. I was too spoiled with 2009's releases that I more or less turned up my nose to most recommendations this year, while at the same time eating up every metal album coming my way. Besides Dessa, Eminem, and The Roots I really haven't been paying much attention. I really wish that I listened to this album back when I was sent this album because holy crap is it ever good. Slick production, great atmosphere, good lyrics and delivery, confuses me why I never got into Shad earlier because he's a Canadian rapper. I also think that it's cool how this album is listed as nuraber 1 on Rate Your Music, it really does give some credence and much deserved attention to the Canadian hip hop scene.

Much obliged. Thanks for the viRAB as well. I didn't mean to come off snarky or anything...it just happens that there are a lot of posts here with really cool artwork and no description. I'm all for checking out an album based solely off artwork, but most of the time it is too much work.

Reviewing some Blur tonight in the form of "The Great Escape"d... an album in their catalogue that is much derided and put down, but I think its actually brimming with great punchy ironic songs and a sense of modern "lostness" that still speaks to me to this very day... a really great album with some actually fairly insightful lyrical observations...

Listened to Echolalia by Something for Kate tonight... forgot how much I love this album... full of great melodies and lyrics, which never fail to satisfy my more thoughtful, more reflective side....

I completely agree with all of these albums, though if it is the shoegaze sound you are after I would have to replace Psychocandy with DarklanRAB. Psychocandy is a bit too chaotic to be considered shoegaze in my opinion. You can't go wrong with Slowdive, though.

Just got back into Bowies Berlin albums.
I can never make my mind up which is the best out of Low and Heroes. I think Low generally 'cause the 'songs' on Heroes are a bit cold sounding.

Ya know, I never actually thought it would happen, but I actually really, really enjoyed the heck out of Muse's The resistance today while i was running erranRAB in my car... that suprised me! I thought I'd like it but I had no idea i'd be so impressed with it!

Just captures the Flag in all their visceral, brooding glory. ALOT clearer than 'Live 1984' .
Highlight: Rollins losing it at the end of 'My War': 'Annihilate! YES!! Destroy!! I AM THE DISCIPLINE!!!'

Owe this one to Cardboard, probably my favourite Zappa album. The start of the Zappa mythos for me.
Highlight: Tough, as these 60's Zappa albums are like a more like a series of ingenious moments... 'Be a joik, go to woik', the cut-and-paste of 'Brown Shoes Don't Make It'.
