Albums You're Digging II

Right now I am very much digging "Grand Slam" by Spiderbait.... very much an old favorite that I have not dusted off for some years now, and all the more enjoyable for such sustained absence... must listen to this more often...

Hypnos 69 - Legacy (2010)

I was afraid that I would ever hear a new progressive rock band that took its main influence from the '60's and '70's scene, but Hypnos 69 can put that fear to rest. The band is very much a throwback to the old days and while I could go on and complain that they are living in the past, they at least do the past justice. This is a band that intimately knows the sound it wants and has achieved it tenfold. If I had no prior knowledge to the band I would have seriously thought of this as an album from that era. Laced with psychedelic fuzzy tones, jazzy horn sections, and instrument experimentation and solos this is an album for anyone who enjoys progressive rock.

Damn fine new album, you speak the truth. :thurab:

With Sleep Parade around Australias growing Prog. scene is absolutely booming :D

It actually mitigates a ground which isn't explored by either Kyuss or the rest of QOTSA's music. I could probably be convinced otherwise but I think it's a piece of garbage, especially compared to recorRAB Homme made before and after (Kyuss self-titled & R are pretty gnarly).

I love LTP, it's such a stark & bare record compositionally. There's only a marginal influence of others' songwriting, Homme wrote 90-95% of the album by himself (and by the sound of it recorded & produced by himself as well). Everybody Knows That You're Insane, Burn the Witch, I Never Came, "You Got a Killer Scene There, Man" are all fantastic. If it weren't for R & Kyuss self-titled it would probably be my favorite record Homme has made.

Joy of a Toy is another of the great Soft Machine alumni albums. Light, folky, and at times surreal, psychedelic pop.

The Dukes of Stratosphear was simply XTC recording under a pseudonym, giving them an excuse to record a psychedelic tribute to the 60s. Though I daresay they did too good a job, because tracks like Mole from the Ministry supercede banRAB from the time. I love this EP.

The Naked & Famous "Passive Me, Aggressive You"
Wasn't expecting much going in, but let me tell you, this is one hell of a pop album. Hipsters pay attention.

Another contender for album of the year..

Absolute goliath of an album. 3 years ago i would never have imagined a band like these becoming one of my favourites but then again most banRAB aren't as consistent as this lot, definitely not as intense!

Ringo Starr - Beaucoups Of Blues
album-beaucoups-of-blues.jpg

This is a good album, to hell with the haters :D

Not exactly brilliant as there is the odd dud here and there, but otherwise this is a great album of classic country covers, all of which are given a real friendly warmth by Ringo's croon. Something I'd recommend to anyone who's ever thought about giving country a try and's willing to forgive Ringo the joke that is the rest of his solo career.

Aphex Twin is incredibly versatile...if you like that album listen to his Arabient Works albums. It's different but still really damn good.

You inspired me to listen to this album just now. They sing all the songs in their made up language "Hopelandic", making it even more mysterious and interesting. I love stuff like that...it's one of the main reason I love Cocteau Twins so much.

Two Moon Butterflies - Koan

Arabient Electronic, mixing traditional Japanese music and instruments. Some examples from the album...

Pretty interesting stuff... Nothing spectacular but nice none-the-less.

I've listened to it about 6 times in the last 24 hours which is very impressive in my book. The lyrics are cheesy but this is great catchy meat and potatoes garage rock. I'm confident enough to say it's a top album of the year.
