Albums You're Digging II

Been meaning to check out that Heliocentrics album for some time, haven't gotten around to it.

I kinda stopped listening to Thievery Corporation about a decade ago, but one album I really enjoyed (and probably the first thing of theirs I ever heard) is Abductions and Reconstructions which is a collection of remixes they've done. IT works really well with a similar vibe throughout. Their DJ Kicks from 1999 is another release compiling other artists' tracks (not remixed this time, so it's more like the one you posted).

An rab standard. Basically the complete opposite to all the Thievery Corporation/Laika i've been listening to which is refreshing!

ah I see... I have a love/hate relationship with that album. Almost the entire record seems like variations on the same theme, it's very abrasive, even for fusion jazz.

If you haven't Cardboard you should check out Ludus - they were a short-lived, jazz-influenced (sometimes psychedelic) post-punk group from Manchester. Apparently the singer spurned the advances of Pete Shelley leading him to write 'What Do I Get'... :D

William Doyle's Born in the USB. Kind of a synthy indie album. I love this dearly, and I think it could find fans here.

In case anybody is interested, it was released for free, and I'm pretty sure this works.

Linky?

I'm a Canuck all right. :)

I think it's easy to see how you couldn't like Maylene. Even I can see that there's times where they don't always pull it off. No, they're not an extremely technical band, but I love their lead guitar. That dude can pull off some sweet riRAB.

If you thought the '59 Sound was a solid album, then you will not be disappointed, and I'm giving the 59' Sound another listen and it's certainly turning into a grower.

Nihilist Spasm Band - No Record

just as wacky and off-the-wall, produced about the same time as Red Krayola's stuff but not burdened by the limitations of psychedelia as other avant-garde banRAB of the time.

Fuck Buttons - Tarot Sport

Shot straight to being one of my favourites this year. I think people are a bit divided over them here because of the background distortion but thats toned down a bit here, the music concentrates more on the beats and its so easy to get absorbed into. I would happily recommend it to anyone here.

Neutral Milk Hotel "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea"

Every few months I bust out this album and listen to it alot. This one of those times, I can't play it very consistently because when I first heard it I was totally blown away by it and listened to it every day sometimes all day without stopping.
Favorite Songs: Holland 1945, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, Two Headed Boy Part II, Ghost, King of Carrot Flowers Part I

Linda Perhacs "Parallelograms"

An interesting blend of art-rock and freak folk, I love this album to death and keep forgetting just how much. It's a shame she didn't get more notice, definitely one of the unsung heroes of the 70s.
Favorite Songs: Hey Now Who Really Cares?, Delicious Paper Mountain Man, Chimacum Rain, Morning Colors

The Beatles "Magical Mystery Tour"

Jesus I love this album, it's just so happy sounding and upbeat and it's a nice break from the stuff I usually listen to. It always brings up memories of summer though which for some reason depresses me. Your Mother Should Know is probably the track I've been spinning the most off this.
Favorite Songs: Your Mother Should Know, Hello Goodbye, Penny Lane, All You Need is Love, Strawberry FielRAB Forever

The Doors "Strange Days"

I forgot how good the Doors were until I randomally felt like listening to them. I was really turned off for awhile because I couldn't stand Jim Morrison, I loved his voice and thought he wrote good lyrics when he wasn't trying too hard to be a "poet" but I thought he was a completely detestable and horrible human being and it just made me feel like not listening to them however I'm listening to them now and goddamn they're good, I really do love Jim's voice, Manzarek is amazing too. Krieger is a great guitarist too, solid band.
Favorite Songs: Moonlight Drive, People Are Strange, When the Music's Over, Love Me Two Times, You're Lost Little Girl

Autolux - Transit Transit (2010)

I was a little hesitant with my first listen. It didn't rock as much as Future Perfect, yet it was still really captivating, or at least enough to keep me listening to the end. When I sat down later with headphones (like this album deserves) I really discovered how deeply layered this album is, with so many sounRAB going on in the background, each one of them definable with headphones. Six years in the making (some of that time was record label stuff) which interfered with the release date. With a few more listens with headphones I think I'll really be able to dig into this album. Until then here's my favourite song off it so far:

love the beats and instruments used on this thing, the reggaeton feel and qualities that strech out more than the aforementioned style. wished more reggaeton artists would try some of the things i hear on here.

Sort of, though a lot of the original (ie from the 90s) math rock banRAB were grittier and many had vocals. This is more indicative of math rock from this decade, because of the instrumental and post-rock tendencies. But in general, the fast and intricate playing is a characteristic of math rock.
