Albums You're Digging II

Urgh. What have I become?
Listening to Post-Rock RAB.
A new personal low.

That said, the highs were really great.
I hope to like it even more as time goes on, I can see it being a bit of a grower.
Maybe one day I will appreciate the 14 minute mark!
I'd love to go somewhere really cold and snowy and listen to them, they feel like that kind of album. Especially Lift Your Fists.

The Heliocentrics - Out There
Organic trip-hop, jazz fusion, Post rock, Hip-hop, pseudo-Dixieland jazz? Uh...yeah. Out There is quite a difficult album to pigeon hole into a genre, aside from the catchall tag that post-rock lenRAB itself to be sometimes. Perhaps a better description of The Heliocentric's brilliance is to note that they served as DJ Shadow's back up band for a few of his tours, and you can definitely hear his influence as well on the album. Whatever you wanna' call it, I'm diggin' it pretty hard.

Thievery Corporation - The Outernational Sound
OK, it's not really a Thievery Corporation album in the sense that it's original music created by the duo themselves. The Outernational Sound is actually more of a mix-tape, a 'DJ session' as the CD cover suggests, compiled by Garza and Hilton. Having said that, It's an amazing album regardless. Ironically it retains the duo's signature vibe. I've seen 'party mixes' released as albums under the clout of the name of famous electronic artists before. The more notable example I can think of is Nightmares on Wax's Coming Home, which is also quite good. If you can get past the fact that it's a Thievery Corporation album in name only, I think any TC fan would be more than pleased with it.

Tim-Buckley-Goodbye-And-Hello-1967-Front-Cover-28111.jpg

I've long been acquainted with Tim Buckley but revisiting him I was blown away by this album. Goodbye and Hello is a crystalline folk-rock segue of the sixties, and with none of the glorification of counter-culture rubbish that goes along with most artists in this vein. I don't think it's hyperbole to say that this bests anything Nick Drake offered up.

Quite enjoying listening to Doves Kingdom of Rust tonight... very interesting blend of their big arena rock sound and their more groovy (a bit of the old Sub Sub bleeding through, maybe) sound... still it all comes together as a nice package with alot of density and sound to get lost in which is one of the things I have always loved most about this band.

Four Tet - 'Pause'
This was recommended to me maybe 3 or 4 years ago and I never got round to it. I was wondering aimlessly around Last.FM and came across it. Decided to give it a go. Very fun and catchy progressive instrumental pieces. Perfect for a sunny day on public transit.

Thom Yorke - 'The Eraser'
Kind of like stripped down Radiohead (and i've heard it refered to as 'Kid B'). This has some really personal lyrics on it and that's what I like about Thom. Currently listening to this more than any of my Radiohead mainstays.

The Strokes - 'Is This It?'
The singles are pretty much the soundtrack to my rowdy pub going, underage drinking, sneaking a cigarette days. Very nostalgic and just makes me want to party. The US equivilant of Arctic Monkey's first LP.

social satire yielded pretty much all their classics, although village green is the whimsical idealistic one which you can't argue with really. PE would be proud. Plastic Man/Burn Hollywood Burn there is definitely a link there. or not

Digable Planets - Reachin' (a new refutation of time and space)

Some of the smoothest rap I've ever heard. I think a lot of people who grew up in the 90's will recognize Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat). Some great jazz/hip hop blending going on here...it's too bad they broke up after the next album. Though I hear they started working on a new one in 05...who knows if we will ever get to hear it.

Today for some unknown reason I was really digging indie rock...

Vampire Weekend's self titled album is a great listen. Shame I didn't really listen to it before, I missed out for a long time.

Arcade Fire's Funeral has quickly become a favorite, for some reason I didn't give it much of a chance before. Scottsy finally persuaded me talking about them all the time in here that there must be something to them, and he was right.

The best album by one of the most interesting banRAB of the last decade.

They somehow figured it out, made music very unlike anyone else, that just really clicks with me. The Invitation is definitely one of the greatest songs ever written.

I need to crank it out myself actually.

Sir - The Night I met My Second Wife

Not for everyone, downbeat acoustic folk from Ausland. I dunno, I really like it despite it being pretty set in its way.

Flaming-Lips-Erabryonic-540x540.jpg

flaming lips - erabryonic

lots of filler but the good stuff is good.

my ADD erabryonic list:

convinced of the hex
the sparrow looks up at the machine
aquarius sabotage
see the leaves
the ego's last stand
worm mountain
silver trerabling hanRAB
watching the planets

35 minutes of great material makes an album in my book.
