Albums You're Digging II

The Church is amazing IMO, every single album is absolutely worthwhile... although it must be said that I listen to their 90's output far more often these days!

Got this late last night, listened to it 3 times today. Already it's a top 100 album. Fantastic stuff. Costello is a superb songwriter and vocalist. Thanks for this Bulldog.

Near perfect Neo-Psychedelia from the Liverpool band. This is so underrated and really shouldn't be. Fantastic album.
Personal highlights: Love Is A Wonderful Colour, Out Of Season

I can vouch for those :thurab: Been a while since I listened to either of them though.

Leonard Cohen - Dear Heather

It's weird how little Cohen I've listened to over the last three or four months, and by little I of course mean none at all. His swansong album here's decent stuff overall. Brilliant lyrics to match the laid back, morose atmosphere as per norm but a) On That Day is a crap song and b) there's not much musically-speaking that particularly blows my mind whenever I heard it. Well, in most places anyway.

Fang Island - Fang Island

Awesome little band from Rhode Island, found out they were supporting The Flaming Lips over in the US at the minute so I decided to check them out. Brilliant album, although the last 3 songs aren't fantastic which let's it down a little bit. If you're into banRAB like Holy Fuck then throw this debut on.

Pale Saints - In Ribbons

Was recommended this album by a friend whilst I was going through my shoegazey phase. Was listening to a lot of Ride, Slowdive, Chapterhouse.. somehow had never came across Pale Saints before. Glad I did though, really spacey album, absolutely brilliant for just chilling out late in the evening. Can't fault a single thing about this album or what I've heard from the band thus far.

Loop - A Gilded Eternity

Pretty much what you expect from Loop - it's brilliant, just like their other two recorRAB. Lots of droning guitar riRAB, heavy use of repitition, obviously inspired by krautrock. It sounRAB a lot like Spacemen 3 but with more purpose and drive, and more of a sinister edge to the music. "Breathe Into Me" might be my favourite Loop song, too.

I've heard their vocals are more extreme on other albums? Like that Linoleum Knife song? It's a shame, but I'm open-minded and will pretty much listen to anything, it may take some time to adjust though. I like Meshuggah, is it as extreme as that?

yeah i'll PM you the link, I hope it doesn't leave you cold, I always used to hate this kind of stuff but I have a really weird almost tongue-in-cheek (but not) way of appreciating alot of music that some people might find cringe-worthy...
The variety is good though and there are plenty of ludicrous band names (my favourite is a track by Tygers of Pan Tang :p:) - also you can really hear the hangover of prog rock influence in some tracks, alot of these guys started in prog.

Oh and there is a Maiden track (I've never been a fan either) but it's pre-Dickinson.

Yeah, same here. Not everyone's cuppa tea, but I love listening to it first thing in the morning; that point of the day where your somewhere between sleeping and being awake enough to brew your first cuppa coffee.

^ Gave this a spin for the first time in ages today. Not as good as I remeraber it being, but still has a few great songs on it. In terms of that whole 'westerner tries to do world music' thing, it's very much outdone by David Byrne's Rei Momo.

Never heard of 'em. Doesn't sound like I should bother. :D But yeah I see what you're saying, this may have been one of the first albums of the era in which I heard such goofiness, so I hadn't warmed up to it.

Tom Waits - The Heart Of a Saturday Night

I've had this CD for a good three-odd years, and I'm only just starting to get obsessed with it. Goes down so well on a lazy Sunday like this.

It's absolutely stunning, I don't know why I didn't get into it before.

Favorite tracks: The Shape Of Punk To Come, Worms Of The Sense/Faculties Of The Skull, New Noise
