Acid Image 3.0 problem

Has anyone had a problem with the acidimage 3.0 upgrade?
While changing the views my T1 froze. I hit the reset button and my palm just died. I can't get anything to turn it back on. Help!

AcidImage and RescoViewer use different ways of preserving thumbnails. From my experience when "auditioning" trials, AcidImage creates a folder on the SD Card, and creates some "AI" files under EACH of the DCIM categories for photos you may have.

RescoViewer (for edification only) makes a silly 11k file under EACH AND EVERY PHOTO on the card, or takes up a sizeable amount of handheld RAM to do the same. AcidImage's way is BETTER and leaner.

HOWEVER . . . if AI ever crashes, it is because it is searching for files and either not finding them or "choking" trying. For instance, if you use a file utility to delete images "wholesale" AI may crash on next opening. It is better to use AI itself to delete images as it "amends" it's thumbnail DB accordingly.

When loading the upgrade something along these lines may have happened, barring a bug in 3.0 which I don't have.

A quick fix would be use a file utility (or card reader and doing it on the PC) and DELETING: AI Prefs, ALL AI files in ANY folder you can find on the card, and DELETING the AcidImage folder under "Programs."

This will give AI a "fresh start" at FINDING images - you'll get the same goofy "startup messages" and may have to re-enter preferences such as image size (that's what the thumbnails do - preserve what you like in "sizing" for next time you open).

has anyone noticed how much faster AI3.0 is. May not be an issue on T3 but on a humble T1 it is significant, maybe a factor of nearly 2 faster...was the old version native ARM code??

Thanks for the input but unfortunately I cannot even turn the handheld on. None of the buttons work and the light does not even come on in the charger. My power button has not worked for some time so I cannot even do a hard reset.

If the new Acidimage caused this, I would be carefull loading it until they work out any bugs!

well, no problems on my T1 so far (knock on wood). It may be that your T gave up the ghost while AI was running but the two may not necessarily be connected. It sounds like a hardware problem to me and you might want to seek a replacement or something...

My screen froze (lightened at first and then pixelated) when I tried to resize an image. The first two incidents were solved by a soft reset, but the third time froze my screen and no resets (soft or hard could turn my unit off). I had to wait 3 hours until the battery died and the unit automatically resetted before I could do a hot sync.

I can not find out yet why it is happening consistently only to some folders, and not to others. I already erased all AI files as suggested in this post but it is still happening. Maybe there is really a bug in version 3.0 (it was good that my unit responded to soft reset during these last instances).

I was trying to validate if was happening to files contained in sub-folders, but this did not seem so. The files were also previously marked private, but it still happened even when I ummarked it.

Acid Image is a good software and I don't want to delete it yet. I just hope that a fix can be found soon.

I don't want to risk further tests because I am afraid that my screen will freeze again and not be turned off.

Hello -

There is a new minorly-tweaked update available here:
http://acid-image.com/aibeta.html

This release handles memory a bit better on the Tungsten T and T2.

As some of you probably know, the T and T2 have enormously tiny dynamic heaps, so AcidImage 3.0 can run out of dynamic heap space pretty easily. Typically this happens in the multi-thumbnail views.

Even with this tweaked update, it may be tough to run cross-fading slideshows on the T and T2. If any applications on your T or T2 are allocating and not releasing dynamic heap memory, things get very tight very quickly for any app, including AI 3.0 (a soft reset can clean up the dynamic heap).

As for the guy who's Tungsten T isn't turning on anymore, that sounds like a battery that can no longer take a charge, or something. Not likely software related. About the worst thing that happens with AI 3.0 on the T is you run out of memory and AI complains, and the latest tweak fixes that pretty well.

Speed-wise things should be faster - with the latest tweaked update, AI 3.0 really rocks quite well on the Tungsten T.

Enjoy,

thanx Scott,

I have had no probs yet apart from some funky screen-refresh probs that is most likely related to the heap problem (yep, my trusty old TT is still going strong). Apart from that, v3.0 is fantastic and very much faster than 2.X....Im afraid that the heap limitations of the TT and TT2 are basically making these machines obsolete as far as new software is concerned. Shame, but thats progress...now where is my pesky T8 with 512Mb of RAM and 10Mb of heap memory.......oh, was it a dream....but man, you should see the size of the batteries....

Keep up the great work.

Two quick things, if you can spare the time (please):

1. TealMover allows you to CHANGE the amount of dynamic stack requested by an application. If people were to INCREASE the amount from the default 3300 (or whatever AcidImage requests) to something near DOUBLE that, would it eliminate their problems?

2. YOU HAVE THE BEST VIEWER. PERIOD. But it's very expensive at $50. You may have seen, and I invite you to read it if you haven't, the raging rant I have going against Iambic's Agendus. I would like to ask you YOUR thoughts as a developer regarding upgrades for AcidImage. How long are upgrades available?

While you may not want to comment on another developer (God, I wish you would) do YOU think it's fair to be charged constantly for upgrades when fixes aren't being made to CURRENT versions? How would Red-Mercury handle, say, a bug in AcidImage? Apparently by FIXING it with betas . . . I'm curious when the "upgrade $$" would be required. Any thoughts would be most appreciated. An awful lot of us here don't mind spending the $$$, as long as it's not a constant "come-on" for more cash and frankly don't want to be stung again! Perhaps you could give us some insight as to how AI handles problems, upgrades and customer service.

Also, would you ever consider LINKING contact photos to the address book? Agendus takes up 62k of RAM to tie ONE photo from DCIM to a contact - 20 photos (and poor quality, small thumbnails at that) would cost you over !MB of RAM just to LINK them. If there was a way to link photos to the address book I dare say a lot of people here would send you the $$ TODAY, as it would solve two problems - having a great "drag-image" viewer AND contact linking to images.

Thanks in advance, and special thanks for posting here. It's nice to see ONE developer who actually cares. Cheers.

I posted earlier a problem I encountered with Acid Image 3.0 for the purpose of finding out whether some users have encountered the same situation.

I am happy to say though that Red Mercury has responded quite quickly to an email that I sent to them about it and they requested pertinent details to help them analyze the problem. I accept that bugs can happen in new releases, and what I value is the developer's commitment to address such when it comes. Red Mercury has not failed in this regard since the concerns I raised to them where responded quite quickly.

So far I have bought 3 licenses for Acid Image (for my family's PDAs), two of which were acquired 2 or 3 years ago, and updates had been quite regular and FREE. Their latest version, despite the problem that fortunately has not recurred with their new tweak (3.003), is excellent with its bluetooth sending/receiving and resize capability. What it just lacks is a cropping tool, and that is what I am waiting for to complete my wish list.
