Take care of yourself man. Sorry for your troubles. As someone else said here, I like your straight forward and honest approach for the post. Makes me think that you are one of those types that will actually learn from such an experience...

How long have you been driving?

Cheers

Hey PK, glad you came through the slide is as good a fashion as you did. No broken bones is a plus.
Sand or gravel gets the best of them so don't take it to hard on that point. Have you considered fixing the bike yourself?

I wish you a quick recovery. Hate seeing posts like this, reminds me of the chances we take every time we get on the bikes. I am very surprised by the damage to your hands, those gloves completely failed you. I low sided at the track at over 100mph and my Joe rockets held up better than yours; I was still very unhappy with my gloves.

we are nuts, you are still in pain, I would imagine and you are thinking of how quick you can get the bike fix. my arm was still in a cast when I bought my present bike, the wife had to ride it from the dealership home. :-)

get well soon.

I had my first get off last year in March. Low speed, I hit a dip in the road while going right off a yield / exit on to a 2 land road w/ a 35 mph limit. I'm sure I was under 35, and estimate about 30. My zx14 hit that dip and went into a tank slapper and spit me off. I'd been riding 16 years, and had the 14 for almost 2 years. Came off a ZX11 prior to that.

I was able to ride home, but took some muscle damage & had to go to the ER afterwards. I replaced the left side plastics & nose piece myself.

I was wearing full gear/ stich, Arai & Lee Parks deer skin gloves & sidi boots.

The arai saved me from a nasty face plant, the stich kept all my joints uninjured, and took a few minor tears. The LP gloves did help with the abrasion, but with no padding I got a serious (golf ball sized) contusion on the back of my hand. The boots pulled an anchor out that held the toe slider in place. Neither Motonation, nor Sidi Italy would ship one to me. I contacted them literally half a dozen times, offered money for the -explicit- part 3 times, spoke with everyone I could there unitl I contacted Sidi directly, who put me back in touch with Motonation - who then
asked for what part I needed & how to get it to me ( this was the 6th time I'd given the same info ).

I never got the part from them. I will never buy another Sidi product, nor anything distributed by Motonation. I highly encourage everyone to boycott Motonation as well. They don't stand behind the products they sell, and couldn't give a $hit less about their customers.

Aerostich OTOH fell over backwards to help me repair my suit, did a full evaluation, emailed the results and then called me with an explanation. And, they did it fast. within a couple days of receipt of the suit. They repaired it and had back in my hands in a week, fixed and fixed RIGHT, the first time without any drama.

Situations like this are what you learn from as a previous poster indicated. In my case, I went down on a turn I've literally taken a thousand times, and to really ice the cake, I was not going that fast. I took several lessons away from this. As a previous teacher of mine said " a validation or invalidation of your tactics and equipment"...

In my case - Steering damper for the 14. Let's see her try that tank slapper $hit again. (actually let's not but it won't happen so easy next time ) Repaired the stich, got a new helmet & replaced the gloves with the super expensive BKS 2000 gloves which have armor everywhere.

just take a hard look at your injuries, their severity and address them.

Thanks - hey what value do you get from life if you fabricate everything? I'll definitely learn from this! #1 - Wear a helmet ALL the time. #2 - Rain only washes sand off the road if there isn't a curb to stop it :P

I've been riding for just over a year - 2,500 miles.

Just got the estimate from the shop. He called it a "cosmetic total". I'm thinking about getting it repaired instead of totaling it (if insurance company lets me). I'd rather keep my bike - that I broke in and wrecked - than start over with a new bike.

What do you all think? Maybe my perspective is off and I should total it?

Or maybe I should take the check to have it totaled, then buy it back and pick through the cosmetic repairs? I'm not even sure how to go about doing that...

Here's some info:

2008 848
2,500 miles
$12,500 in damages
owe 9-10k on 2.9% financing (currently 7.9%) - saw no reason to pay it off with such a low rate

Damages include:
scratched swingarm (I have a brand new CF cover in my closet) - $2500
scratched speedo (on top, dark windshield would cover it) - $1300
other cosmetic damages - bike is driveable after the shift lever repair
