about subwoofer magnets?

is the bigger a subs magnet the louder it will be, or more bass it will generate. what does magnets do on a sub, what are their purpose ?

what does double stacked mean ?
 
its not about the weight/size of the magnet, but the quality of the magnet and the quality of the materials used to make the sub

here are the factors that will determine that amount of bass/volume that you will get-- the magnet means nothing
--RMS wattage handling of a speaker and amp output
--box type (i like ported/slotted boxes)
--frequency response range (the lower the Hz the deeper/lower the bass)
--speaker sensitivity (MOST IMPORTANT) a speaker that has a sensitivity that's 3dB higher than another will only require half the RMS wattage the achieve the same volume

The bigger the magnet does not mean the sub will hit harder or be louder. The entire construction of the sub is important to the final output, not just one feature.

The purpose of a magnet goes back to how a sub/speaker works. A speaker has a negative and a positive terminal. Your amp will give the speaker an AC signal to the two terminals. This signal runs through the voice coil which is simply a wire that is wrapped in a circle. This wire is connected to the cone. When the wire is powered it will act like an electromagnet. That means when it is powered the magnet on the sub/speaker will be attracted or repelled from the electromagnet caused by the wire. This will either pull the cone toward the magnet or push it out. This in and out movement of the magnet is how the sub produces sound.

So the magnet is very important for a sub as it would not work without it. There are also other parameters that are equally as important. The combination of all these parameters is what makes a sub loud or sound good.

Double stacked will refer to having two magnets, one stacked on another, instead of one magnet.

Yes in a sense but not always true. The heavier the magnet then the more umph or head vibration you get rather than just the note. Like you can hit a low note with any sub but with a bigger magnet it may make your dash shake.
Your magnet is the muscle that drives the cone. the stronger the better.

If you take 2 magnets and stack them together then that means double stacked. Not much of a difference. Not really important.

Just go by the rms wattage that the sub can handle and you will get a good sub picked out. The higher RMS watts, the better. Why you ask?
RMS is "constant" watts .
"peak or max" watts is what the sub can handle for a short period of time.
Do you listen to the whole song or do you listen to a split second of it?

OK then you want to compare subs using RMS specs! remember- the higher rms the better.

If you find 2 subs and can't decide because they have the same rms then get the heavier magnet one.
