A few car audio questions...?

1.) What is a capacitor? Why do i need it and when? (i'm getting a 1000 watt amp and i'm not sure if a capacitor is necessary.)

2.) For the sub box, how come on youtube i see people whose sub enclosures have a port to let air out? I thought the point was to seal the enclosure? I'm asking cause i have a sub box for a 12 inch sub and there is no hole in it. Does the hole make better bass?
 
A capacitor stores energy/charge/power (whatever you want to call it) to allow your amps to draw power from the capacitor instead of the battery. If you have seen other cars with systems the headlights will sometimes dim when the bass hits. A capacitor will prevent this. Basically extend the life of you battery. I would recommend =]

As for the box. Ported boxes are suppose to be better...but I personally think it depends on the vehicle. Something like an SUV where there is plenty of air to move around then it is definitely better, but like a car where the box is in the trunk it is not going to make much of a difference. Most speakers have different requirements for airspace/internal dimensions of the box for ported boxes and sealed. Check your manual if the speakers are new...if you bought them used check online. Most companies have download-able manuals
