___AVATAR Review Thread___

SounRAB like you're spoilt for choice then :)

If both multiplexes are showing Avatar in 3D then you might want to go to the Showcase instead as they use the Dolby 3D system which is apparently superior to the older ReadlD system used by Odeon  (check out post #105 for more details)

Why oh why did he call the mineral "unobtainium"?! It must have been him losing a drunken bet. If he hasn't worked on anything else since Titanic he obviously cares about the movie then takes the piss with stuff like that.

I see this movie as opening the gate for improving the experience of other movies rather than excitement about the movie itself. Also, apparently seeing it on a high quality screen like an IMAX Digital rather than a regular film cinema screen can make quite a difference.

I think one of the biggest problems though which was quite noticable in this film was the problem of focus.

When a normal camera focuses on the actor, we think nothing of it as they are the focus of the frame. But in 3D, the camera focus is still on that person and it feels un-natural.

You're immersed in the 3D world, where you head tells you you should be able to focus properly on the background and background characters, but your eyes are telling you it isn't happening.

I went yesterday to see it and agree with everything you have said. I absolutely loved it, and I found it hard to tell the difference sometimes between what was real and what was CGI.

I need to see it again as there is so much visually to take in all at once! :)

Detail in the stills, maybe, but for me Final Fantasy didn't look right when it moved. It looked weird. Where-as for me, Avatar did look right. It crossed the uncanny valley; the animated characters didn't look like humans with dead eyes. That was a high technical accomplishment.

I thought the opposite.
It was always his job to infiltrate, and that's what he did. He then reported everything both to the scientists and the military. He was working against her, so probably not in love with her. That grew as he spent time with her, as she was teaching him.
I do agree it lacked something though, but I think that's because they were both weak characters. As were all the others.

Interesting review here.
Raises an interesting point about Cameron being over-rated as director, when you take into consideration that T2 was 1991, since then he's directed only True Lies, Titanic and this.

And yes, i know Titanic was popular, but so is herpes, but it doesn't mean it's right! :D

Scuse my ignorance, but am I right to assume you can buy the 3D glasses at the cinema?? If I book tickets will I have to queue twice, once at the ticket machine and once at the counter to get the glasses?

Briefly: wow!

Who cares if it doesn't have the greatest plot of all time, it is a bit cowboys and indians but who cares. The story was ok, the sound and CGI were incredible.

9/10

I seen it in 3D and thought it was rather good, ive seen better films though.

I must say though the best bit of 3D i seen all night was in the Trailer for Alice in Wonderland :) the Cat that was sitting in the middle looked like you could just grab it.

i was really blown away by it...the underwater scene was great as was being chased through the jungle.

did everybody get the same 3d aRAB ? the one with the head made out of stones and the glass shattering, they looked great

I went and saw this during the week.

I didn't look too much into it before going. I kept getting told bits and bobs about it being created over a long period of time and a vast amount of money being spent on it. Let's face it, over 10 years most of the money was probably wages :D (Kidding)

The storyline left me underwhelmed. I'm not big into the kind of storyline it revolved around. I was reminded a little of other films such as Braveheart and Matrix. I could predict where things were going from early on in the plot. I don't think it should've been as predictable as all that with 10 years focus on it. Although admittedly I guess most of that time would've been on effects rather than storyline related.

I have since read reviews on what people thought of trailers and graphics, such as they looked like they were from a game. I have to say, when watching it....I didn't get that feeling.

I will say this for the movie, when watching, I could truly believe Pandora existed and that they were allowing people to film them. I loved seeing all the wee bits and bobs of the world, and the interactions of the characters. This made the movie worth watching, even if I wouldn't watch it a 2nd time.

The 3D effect, I was left feeling a little disappointed with. One friend said he was disorientated by it to begin with but got used to it. It was his first 3D.

Another friend said, she didn't believe this movie was to make things jump out at you, it was more to allow you to fully explore the world of Pandora. Which I could understand afterwarRAB.

Having seen Final Destination in 3D (which in my opinion was the only reason for seeing it but that's another thread), I was expecting things to jump out at me, once I got used to the idea that that's not what this one was about, I got emersed in the world being depicted. Sometimes I would see it as a blur, but I'm not so sure if that was the movie or my eye sight!

Over all it wasn't the worst way to pass a few hours, but not something I would see again :)

*edit: 3D doesn't cost extra here :D

Thanks for your reply.

I must say, I think i'm in the minority as didn't really enjoy it. I nodded off about an hour in and by the second hour was tempted to walk out and started counting ceiling tiles in the cinema instead. It was ok, but seemed to go on for much longer than it needed to and the storyline didn't seem that good.

The graphics etc. were good though!

I saw this at the weekend and was absiolutely blown away by the 3D imagery..it was my first ever 3D film experience and I am totally impressed.
i know the plot was simple and more than a little predictable but it was just so stunning to watch that I really didn't care!
One small-ish point though and I wonder if anyone else here has noticed this..some of the Pandora lanRABcapes looked more than a little similar to some of the areas in 'World of Warcraft'...:)
