I've just seen Avatar and have read the whole thread. I went with a real fan of the film who had seen it before, and my daughter.
I tend to agree with you Paddy, I thought it was visually stunning, but the plot was not just tired it was exhausted, and recently and moreover it was applied in the most cliched way possible.
Cartoony in fact. The characterization was rigid and totally one dimensional.
This is a terrible shame, really. It should have tried for less breadth and more depth and quirkyness in the storytelling.
I found that aspect of it means that it is not a 'great' film, as 'Toy Story' really was, and is, despite the wonderful visuals.
Nevertheless smaller children will love it, and they have not seen the films the rest of us have, so there is a place for it.
Mind, my daughter is 14 and she thought it was like The Matrix, and 'Pocahontas'.
Still, I enjoyed myself and am glad I have seen it.
