i finally got around to watching the oscars the other day...2 days after they were broadcast......i purposedly stayed away from this forum. newspaper, radio or any other type of media to keep from being spoiled....
random thoughts.....some of the commercials were better than the actual broadcast...which i mostly just fast forwarded, except for the winners and some of the acceptance speeches that were given....
pleasant surprise that tilda swinton won in the best supporting actress...i've been a fan of hers ever since i saw her in a film about incest called
'the war zone'
while i think that marion cotillard gave an oscar winning performance for her performance in
'la vie en rose'.......i'm still not terribly fond of the film,
i thought it was put together in a slipshod manner...
no surprises in best actor or best supporting actor categories......
agreed that
'no country for old men' deserved best picture and best director (s) award.....paul thomas anderson and johnny depp will one day have their day at the oscars too.....
thought some of jon stewart's jokes and monologues were in bad taste....notably the one about cate blanchett and her different roles....and saying that she was the dog that josh brolin shot in
'no country for old men'
but then surpising he evened things out by bringing back the best song performer and writer markéta irglová, so that she could thank the audience after being cut off by the music....
surpised that
'taxi to the dark side' won the best documentary oscar this year....given the stark and brutal torture scenes and pictures that are so prolific in that film.......
my biggest gripe about the oscars usually has to do with the animated/live action shorts and short documentary categories......the majority of these films are never seen by anyone..
but the good news.... if you live in orange county, california....
opening this friday at the regency theater south coast plaza they'll be showing the 2007 academy award nominated live action shorts.....listed below....
