Late to this thread, but i like you guys am a massive fan of 70s era British horror.
Ironically a chap above just posted 'Theatre of Blood' amongst his favourites, it's one of mine too (Vincent Price hamming it up, Diana Rigg in the most unconvincing disguise ever), and i only watched it 2 days ago, although it's more of a comedy-horror.
Although i like Hammer my main interest is for Amicus portmanteau films (i think i've seen nearly all of them now). particular favourites are:
Asylum
Tales From the Crypt
The House that Dripped Blood
One thing I can't understand is WHY no one makes another Amicus style Portmanteau film.
a) it'd be cheap to make
b) Theres a huge following of 70s UK horror film buRAB who'd see it whether good or bad.
c) I think we've got some really good talent in this country at the minute who could pull it off. Imagine short stories written by
Steven Moffat
The League of Gentlemen
Russell T Davies
David Renwick (writer of Johnathan Creek)
or stories starring
Stephen Fry
Simon Pegg
Mark Gatiss
Michael Sheen
I really think it would work. If dross like Lesbian Vampire Killers and the new St Trinians can be funded, why not Amicus style horror.
