70's British Horror.

That's what I want to do, but I don't have a DVD recorder under the telly, just the V+ box, so I would have to find a way to transfer it to the PC to edit it.

Two things that stick in my mind with 70's British horror movies ....

1. The short story about the uncaring governor of a home for the blind who gets his come uppance from the residents.

2. Madeline Smith's tits :eek::)
 
Love Tales of the Crypt. I just love the Joan Collins story with the red poster paint blood.

One story I never quite understood was "Wish You Were Here" Here's the Wikipedia synopsis:

"Businessman Ralph Jason (Richard Greene) is close to financial ruin. His wife Enid (Barbara Murray) discovers a Chinese figurine and wishes for a fortune. Ralph is killed on the way to collect it. She uses her second wish to bring him back to the way he was just before the accident but learns that his death was due to a heart attack (caused by a skeletal ghoul, who follows Ralph on a motorcycle and ultimately scares him to death, as a result of the figurine). When she once again wishes for him to be brought back to life, she finRAB she has trapped him in eternal pain because his body had been embalmed."

Ok so here's what I just don't get. Why is Ralph being sent to Hell?


In all the other stories the characters in Hell have done something morally reprehensible and are thus being punished accordingly. However, in the case of Ralph, apart from facing financial ruin, he hasn't really done anything to deserve going to Hell. He didn't request that his wife bring him back to life. Surely it is his wife that should be punished for thinking she could play God?

If I have missed the point or my memory is failing me, please put me out of my misery :D
 
During the 1070's Yorkshire TV had a season of classic horrors 'Appointment with Fear' now even the pre movie logo used to scare me!!.
Wonder why we never see the universal 1930 classics on TV anymore..they are more antertaining than cheap reality TV emergency crew shows!!
 
It doesn't seem to be there any more. It's a long time since I downloaded it so maybe Hammer have realised that it isn't PD and had it removed. I thought it was odd.:confused:
 
Had a bit of an Amicus blitz on DVD's thanks to this thread! Just picked up Dr Terror's House of Horrors, The House that Dripped Blood, The Amicus 3 Disc Collection (including And Now the Screaming Starts, The Beast Must Die and Asylum), and the Vipco release of Vault of Horror, since my R1 version is cut to ribbons by the censors.

Does anyone here have the Vipco Vault of Horror disc? I'm getting mixed reports on the picture quality. Some say it's actually fine and comparable to the recent Film Four showing. Others say it's very poor and shaky. What's the truth? It'd have to be very bad indeed for me to prefer a cut version over it to be honest, and some of the screen grabs I've seen of it look OK to me even though it's in 4:3. Let me know your thoughts on it please.

Classic Corman/Poe portmanteau "Tales of Terror" is on Zone Horror today at 4 I think. OK, it's not British, or even from the seventies, but it's a top film. I love it to bits.

Luckily, my Dr. Terror from eBay was not a bootleg. It was in excellent condition, so I'm a happy punter. Watched Asylum last night. Do you know what? It's only vaguely familiar to me. The Tailor section seemed slightly familiar, and the Robert Powell linking story rang some bells, but generally I can't really be sure I've seen it before. Regardless, it was fantastic fun, especially the dolls segment at the end with Herbert Lom. Priceless! Genuinely creepy first tale I thought, and overall a great example of Amicus at the top of their game. Probably watch "And Now the Screaming Starts!" tonight.
 
I think the rarely seen but excellent "Scream and Scream Again" is due for an outing on Sky sometime soon.
No sign of the equally good "Taste the Blood of Dracula" or "The Blood on Satan's Claw" though.
 
I remember reading an interview with Ms. Smith in which she described how, with her boyfriend's help, she found out how much her breasts actually weighed.:)
 
I find your pereception of which Hammer movies are boring a bit odd.
The Reptile is quite correctly twinned with Plague of the Zombies as The Cornwall Classics.

The Gorgon is not too bad at all.

Now I would agree if you said any of The Mummy films.
 
The Vipco disc is not very good.

The recent Film Four premiere of the uncut version is better quality than the Vipco but is not as good as the Midnite Movies R1 disc which is worth buying just for Tales From The Crypt

Some of the R1 Amicus releases are not as good as the UK ones IIRC.

The UK boxset with Dr Terror,Asylum ,Screaming Starts,Beast Must Die and House that Dripped Blood has commentaries and documentaries with cast and crew including directors.

Am I mistaken in thinking those extras are not featured on the R1 set.

The UK Anchor Bay discs are also remastered and have new DTS surround tracks - although I prefer the mono on those films and that is included too


If you are into 70's British horror you should snap up more of those R1 Midnite Movies sets as they are being deleted and some are already quite hard to find and expensive to get.

Scream and Scream Again is recommended Amicus viewing

Some of the AIP Corman Poe films are getting rare too

The ones that are not deleted can be bought via Amazon Marketplace for under a fiver so get them while you can
