70's British Horror.

Yes I love all the Hammer Amicus and Tigon horror movies right back to the original pairing of Cushing and Lee in Dracula aka Horror of Dracula in 1958 I believe.

Although I didnt see them till the late 60s

Donald Sutherland appeared in the vampire section of House of Horrors. He played a doctor who was presuaded by a colleague that his new wife was a vampire and ended up killing her. At the very end while Sutherland is being taken away by the police his colleague turns to the camera and say "There was only room for one doctor in this town....... and one vampire"

Tales from the Crypt

Reflection of Death stared Ian Hendry
Denholm Elliot wasn't in Poetic Justice
Blind Alley starred Nigel Patrick and Patrick Magee

Another portmanteau to add to your list is The Monster Club. An old writer of horror stories (John Carradine) is bitten by a hungry vampire (Vincent Price). By way of thanks the vampire takes the writer to a club frequented by various monsters and then tell him three spooky tales

70's British horror films were brilliant.

We are currently running a campaign to try and get the BBC2 Horror Double Bills back on television!

We have a petition we'd love you all to sign!

And a Facebook Page too.

I would LOVE to see these old films back on tv as they were such a huge part of my life as a kid. It would also bring these films to the attention of todays kiRAB, which must be a good thing!

The Beast In The Cellar is an absolute hooker - the opening 'slashing' montage, which gives way to the most evocatively-filmed British sunset I've ever seen on film, accompanied by a flawless merging of harpsichord, woodwind and ethereal vocal, pretty much left me spellbound to whatever was to follow.

Besides, Flora Robson and Beryl Reid expatiating about celery is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. You simply have to watch this film!

In a similar vein, NO-ONE interested in this topic should miss 'Horror Hospital' on BBC2 later tonight.

Happy memories of Dracula AD1972. I saw this as a first date with a new girlfriend (honest that's what she wanted to see ). I remember Stephanie Beacham's very prominent cleavage but sadly the film actually featured very little of Christopher Lee as Dracula. Christopher Neame played Johnny Alucard (how original ). It may be a bit dated now but had some excellent scenes.

Dead of Night (1977)?

I'd never even heard of this movie until mentioned on here.I know Dead of Night (1945),but this 1977 TV movie completely escapes me.I realise it has inevitably dated and not likely to scare adults, but is it actually still good and entertaining, for what it is (much in the same way as Salem's Lot is).
I probably should take a look because I notice it's a Dan Curtis production, the guy behind the highly entertaining Kolchak:Nightstalker TV series and TV movies.

I suppose there's a certain pleasure in seeing how bad they were, technically. But no one can say that Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee didn't give their all for such productions, and are worth watching for that alone.

The cut version of VOH does look like a tv version as there are edits to every story.
The mid 80's VHS double bill was the first appearance of the film on home video and thats where I saw the cut version first.
Subsequent screenings throughout the 90's and noughties on Sky Movies, C4 and even Film 4 were of a very nice quality but cut version.

It was only last year when Film 4 obtained the uncut version which is slightly better quality than the Vipco one but quality wise not a patch on the US dvd .

Like Hammer films, the rights to Amicus films are spread out over a number of different film companies and it seems that TFTC and VOH have different ownership in the US and the UK which is why we have a great dvd of TFTC on R1 but nothing on R2.
Maybe the company that owned the UK rights is no longer in existence so the whereabouts of the negative are unknown - although the 80's video release in the UK was from Fox.
Thankfully many of the other Amicus films are owned by Hollywood majors

The last 2 Hammer Dracula films are hard to watch I find.
The attempts at modern trendiness really spoil DAD72 for me- ironically the choice to try and make it look new are the very reason it is the most dated of any of Hammers Dracula films

Anyone after a decent dvd of Satanic Rites of Dracula should avoid all the Public Domain rubbish released in the US and go for the early Anchor Bay US release.
Its a perfect widescreen version although not anamorphic and unlike BBC tv screenings it retains the censor cut of the staking through the female breast that was cut by the BBFC

Nah. There's only really the US Fox release of Vault of Horror that's cut. It comes as a two DVD set with the wonderful, and uncut, Tales from the Crypt. All other Amicus DVD's are uncut as far as I'm aware.

Whilst I agree the golden years of regular double bills are gone, I think the BBC still does a good job in showing old horror movies at night in my opinion. They reguarly screen Tales From The Crypt (like once a year), and recently the showed Hammer's Scream of Fear, the hilariously awful (but so bad it's good) Horror Hospital with Robin Askwith. And a few weeks ago they showed The Gorgon

In fact i'm glad to see the BBC embracing horror a bit more. In 60s and 70s they always used to do a Christmas ghost story adaptation (mainly of an M.R James tale), but come the 80s and 90s they stopped doing it. However last year we had an adaptation of The Turn Of The Screw and the year before that Mark Gatiss' excellent Crooked House series. So hopefully they're re-establishing it.

So whilst I am all for more screenings, i don't think the BBC are failing horror fans so much......Besides if you have freeview try Film 4, recently they screened Vault of Horror and Theatre of Blood.

I'm really surprised there isn't like a horror movie channel....I'd subscribe.

HeaRAB up for anyone interested - Vault of Horror is on Film4 on Saturday night (well, more Sunday morning really!) at 1:20am. I'm going to record it to do a bit of comparison. If only there was a way to get the video off my V+ box and onto the PC...:(
