6 gallon tank?

So far this year I have put 7,600 miles on my 2010 Ultra Classic. On the first big trip to Key West I was getting close to empty and would only be able to put in about 4 gallons at the most.

The last trip to Sturgis I pulled into Wall S.D. with the low fuel light on for about 15 miles. The tank took 4.77 gallons to fill.

I'm beginning to think that the true capacity of the tank is 5 gallons. It does not fill very full with the center location of the cap and I don't think that it can draw out all of the fuel.

What is your experience with the tank capacity?

My mileage was from 41 to 45 mpg. Yeah, we were pushing hard. I was always trying to catch my sons. They fail to understand those little signs along the road called "Speed Limit".

I was having the same issues... now I know it isn't a good idea to run an EFI bike dry, but I had to know. No one could give me an answer. So I had a Qt gallon gas can. I put that in the tour Pak. I filled up the 6 gallons and headed out for a freeway ride which took me from San Diego to Yuma. I got 244.8 miles before I got a sputter. I pulled over right away and then put the qt gallon I had in the can and then found a gas station about three miles down the road. I filled up and then headed home. Silly experiment maybe, but my gauge was on empty at 194, the reserve with 54 miles came on and the low fuel light was also on until I hit the 244.8 mark. I was cruising 80 to 85mph cruise control the entre way.

I go by the miles, not the gauge. The gauge gives me an idea, but the miles are what I go by if I'm riding long distances.

Last night my miles remaining hit Lo, I rode about 15 more miles and stopped to fill up. I had 243 on the trip meter, took 5.4 gal to fill up.

on my 2009 the gauge reads empty long before the low fuel light comes on.
The with about 40 miles of fuel remaining on the count down, the light comes on. Eventually a LO indicator comes on when you're quite low and the count down stops.

Last night I took a risk to get to the gas station I wanted to fill up at.
a LO indicator comes on when you're quite low and the count down stops.

Anyway, when I filled up it took 5.28 gallons and the capacity of the tank is supposed to be 6 gallons. I had gone 240 miles with no sputtering under load to indicate no fuel. I'm in Canada but have done the conversion to American gallons etc for this example.

Depending on the driving situation I've gone as far as 257 miles on a tank.

When I fill up, if the nozzle isn't to sentitive, I can add a lot of fuel after the initial shut off but it's not always possible with some gas stations.

Earlier this year I got stuck on a road in Texas with no nearby gas station. I just kept riding and rode for quite a while with the gauge reading zero, the range left, reading zero. Pulled into the first gas station I came to and she took 6.2 gallons!! Because of the difficulty of filling the Ultra, the last half gallon was pretty much dribbling in, so I don't know if that affects accuracy at the pump.

When the fuel light comes on, I have a little more than 1 gal left in the tank
I use the tripmeter to make sure I never run out of gas. When I hit 200 highway miles or 180 city miles, I fill up. Better be safe than sorry.
