4Kids Talkback: The Crossroads of Destiny - The 4Kids Discussion V10

Since Nick acquired Winx Club, and apparently recently invested in Rainbow stock, they'd be the best bet to pick up season 2 of Huntik, particuarly if Winx is successful. However, it's more likely to see Huntik on the Nicktoons Network.

I understand your point, especially with some of the shows you mentioned that they may be able to broadcast. They are capable of more, but to be fair, they are making an honest effort to improve, and hopefully Tai Chi Chasers will perform well when the time comes. Generally though, if Toonzai continues to get solid ratings than I imagine that 4 Kids will push for new shows. I'd prefer that they get some third party stuff, but the other R1 companies seem to be leaning away from more "mainstream" shows in favor of the anime fandom. Alas, that's completely different rant...

That's pretty cool. I did like his voice for Rex, not to mention he was my favorite character in Dinosaur King. I was already going to see the parade due to always seeing at least a part of it, seeing the Snoopy and Pikachu floats, but I'll try to see if I recognize him when they do that bit from Elf.

Animation turn-around is pretty lengthy, though. It usually takes 1 1/2 to 2 years after a show is pitched for the show to actually air on TV. It takes that long to write, direct, animate, etc. They can plan the original program(s) now, while waiting for the budget to come in off of their attempts to get back on their feet.

Right now, though, I think 4kids needs to take a gamble. Al Kahn ran the company into the ground and 4kids effectively paid him to step down. The current plan slows the bleeding down, perhaps even stops it, but it won't provide the blood transfusion.

The closest thing Japan has to a worldwide hit right now is Fairy Tail IMO. If 4kids got their hands on that, and don't screw it up, they could have a reversal of fortune.

. . . I think I will be doing a part 2: an example show eventually, but I'm going to leave a lot of details vague or generic-sounding so it doesn't look worth stealing.

macattack, while I agree with your ideas on how to make a good show, it really is pretty implausible for 4Kids to make their own series right now. I believe on the technodrome forums, they said each episode of TMNT took $300,000 to make. Multiply that by a single season of 13 episodes and that's a total of about $4,000,000, about half the money they have to work with (last we heard they had about $10 million).

If Kahn is to be trusted, a 1.0 average for Toonzai should result in a significant profit. Last week they broke a 1.1, the highest rating The CW4Kids has seen since its inception. It just doesn't make sense to risk it all that right now, because it would certainly be a nail in the coffin if their original series failed.

I saw a few episodes of the Fairy Tail dub.

Why does everyone think 4Kids should air this?

There's a lot of drinking, fighting, and some lines would probably have to be edited.

It would probably be treated similar to DBZ Kai.

Everyone says there's tons of fanservice in the show, but I only saw a little bit (unless there's more in later episodes).

True, but not all major transactions are handled where one party pays for everything upfront and then is handed the rights to a show, it's not like in the movies where guys roll up in a van with the "product" and the other party cruises through with a briefcase filled with unmarked bills ready to make the swap. Sometimes rights are paid for over time and through other business arraingments, usually the purchase of a show or a major property isn't so much upfront as they are spread throughout a period of time.

I'm hoping that Tai Chi Chasers does find some success and that it paves the way to more brand new shows coming over to America, but a lot of it comes down to advertising the fact that new shows are on their way and 4Kids seems to only advertise within their own block, I never see anything from them in the form of print and The CW is certainly no help at all when it comes to spreading the word. Still, I hope that Tai Chi Chasers is a hit and I can't wait to see it air in the United States, hopefully it isn't much longer until we get word for an official premier date (unless I missed something).

I know that you have said this before, but I really don't think that would work out for the company at this point. Yes, sometimes in business one has to take a chance and basically spend money in order to gain more profit, but I don't think that 4Kids is in any financial position to make a gamble like that right now. Yu-Gi-Oh! does bring in a fairly significant amount of money to 4Kids and while I do see how keeping it for too long can hurt the company more than help it, especially given that lawsuit, it also could help them get back on their financial feet, or at least delay the company closing down so that people have their jobs a bit longer and/or are able to look around for other job opportunities. Besides, trying to find something else that could take off like Yu-Gi-Oh! did when it first premiered isn't that easy. They've tried something like that before with Chaotic that that didn't go too well and after the claims TV Tokyo/NAS made in the lawsuit, I'm not sure if any other Japanese companies would feel comfortable with letting them acquire their anime. Not to mention I don't know if 4Kids would be financially able to dub another anime series along with 5D's and that Tai-Chi Chasers series and they still have that debt to pay off to various companies. If they thought that they could survive without the Yu-Gi-Oh! license or be able to find something that had potential to be just as huge as that franchise, I don't think that 4Kids would be desperately trying to keep the license at this point or fight off the lawsuit. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they did lose the license at some point and even if they manage to win the case in court, I don't know if they would be in a financial position to keep it, but I don't really see a lot of good, for 4Kids' future, if they gave the license up right now.

Also, earlier this morning I went on my xfinity On Demand to watch some episodes of 5D's and GX, but the 4KidsTV section wasn't there at all. I was just expecting the three Yu-Gi-Oh! series to disappear at some point and not the whole section, but that's probably not a good sign. I knew I should have watched those two newly uploaded GX episodes yesterday afternoon, but I didn't think that they would go away right away, especially when they update the section every Monday.

Actually, they probably closed them down because they recently opened a new beta site and with it came a new forum. I don't think they saw the point in keeping two different forums active.

Oh. Didn't know that.

I wouldn't be surprised if 4Kids tried to get the episodes out and dubbed as quickly as possible. It would be nice to see 5D's completely dubbed.

Hopefully, if a new company gets the rights, they'll still let us see the old episodes again, but that's stretching it out a bit.

So, i hope it Replaces Any Sonic X Spot, it's just too Ridiculous.... At Least 2 Airing is ok, but 3 is Completely wasting it.

And, I think if Magical Do-Re-Mi! ever comes back, it should be This instead,

7:00am Cubix (later.... Rocket Monkeys (hopefully))
7:30am Magical Do-Re-Mi
8:00am Magi-Nation
8:30am Tai-Chi Chasers
9:00am Yu-Gi-Oh!
9:30am Yu-Gi-Oh! (or) Yu-Gi-Oh! GX
10:00am Sonic X
10:30am Sonic X
11:00am Dragonball Z Kai
11:30am Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's

It's true that 4Kids needs a good original property to make a truly meaningful turnaround. Are they going to do it? I think Chaotic blowing up in their faces has probably scared them off from doing so, at least for a while. Okay, so they didn't come up with the original concept for Chaotic themselves, but they did all the development for it and while it did okay for a littlle while it turned into a big albatross that sank them badly. So they'll probably have to work up their confidence by stopping the bleeding first before trying anything.

The problem is, with 4Kids the way they are, any original property they launch, even if it's really good, will be facing a huge uphill battle. Because Toonzai is all they've got. Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Disney...the big players on the animation scene won't be interested in anything from 4Kids simply because 4Kids has lacked hits for a long time. CN only gave Chaotic and 5D's passing interest last year, giving them lousy spots, and even though 5D's performed pretty solidly for them, they still didn't care and didn't pick up any more episodes. So that just leaves Toonzai as a launching pad, and because Saturday mornings are practically dead, it's a cold, lonely place to start out from. I'm not saying it's impossible by any means, just that it's going to be really, really tough. Lots of times, great shows with heart just plain don't catch on.

So for now, we'll probably still see some anime acquisitions. I'm still expecting Digimon Xros Wars on the block. Fairy Tail and I don't know, maybe even the upcoming Toriko anime are possibilities (Toriko has worked its way into the top five in Weekly Shonen Jump, though I haven't read the manga so maybe it's not a possibility, I don't know). It's true, there's not a whole lot on the table right now when it comes to new anime to bring over here.

But yeah, as Dubbs showed, an original property woud really be their last shot. It's all or nothing basically. So they'll wait and regroup first.

Interesting...I'm more of a fan of his role as Yoh Asakura in Shaman King though.

It's my favorite 4 Kids dub(besides, you know, Pokemon), though mostly because 4 Kids barely touched the thing...and the complaints they got from parents because of that, likely lead to the tragedy that was their One Piece dub.
