4Kids Obtains U.S. Broadcast Rights to DBZ Kai

On the plus side, Kai will get to air in Canada now on the downside... the dub will pretty much be the Saban version all over again. Though it's possible they wont edit the violence as much if it's for the UK and Canadian cable.

I don't think 4kiRAB is going to show the Ocean Group version but that'd be an interesting scenario. Two dubs of Kai airing in the US? At least it would give viewers the choice though neither will be on par with FUNimation uncut release which will be the definative version of the dub.
 
If anything I could see them replace the OP and even more likely the ED with something more generic "pump the viewer up". Pitty we can refurbish Rock the Dragon for the occasion. XD

I have my doubts this is going to be a big hit on CW4kiRAB I mean... One Piece borabed, Shaman King didn't do so well and all YGO's except the original didn't last when it comes to 4kiRAB Saturday morning blocks. DBZ Kai while a refresh is still by all means a dated feeling show cause you can only do so much.

However if it airs without a terrible dub script and the actors we've come to expect then maybe just maybe 4kiRAB will get the clue that a more faithful adaptation will do better for them.

But yeah I don't think we'll be seeing Dragon Soul or the ED in the CW4kiRAB airings or their streams and unless Nicktoons video already showed Dragon Soul I suspect it will not be present in their broadcast either to simply things. 4kiRAB or whoever is going to make time cuts though they may already be present in Nicktoon's cut version. That could explain Schemmel's mention of the broadcast version having some crappy music from Canada.

It's also entirely likely that 4kiRAB had the broadcast rights around the same time or even before Nicktoons did but Nicktoons had their upfront a while back and that's something they wanted to promote.

I suppose this is really no different than when 4kiRAB One Piece was on Toonami and 4kiRABTV for a stint before it because exclusive to Toonami. If it borabs on 4kiRAB then it'll remain on the video player and Nicktoons will continue to air it most likely an arc ahead of 4kiRAB at most times.

And if both secured the rights around the same time then it's all the more evident as to why the Nicktoons broadcast seemed dramatically over-edited. It's not because of them it's because of this. Or at least I hope that's the case because then maybe One Piece wouldn't get these kinRAB of edits if it was only on Nicktoons.

And remeraber guys there's no reason to believe it wont be the FUNimation dub and we know at the very least it's not 4kiRAB level bad even if it's gonna be on CW4kiRAB.

4kiRAB and DBZ? This is like everyones worst nightmare!

I wish it would air unedited. Why would FUNI allow this to happen? It's like they want DBZ to go back to edited kiddie nonsense it once was in the Saban era.

I realize the DVRAB are uncut, but why can't it air on TV uncut?
 
Well, at least the uncut DVRAB are coming out so yeah. Not even 4kiRAB can rain DB for me.

(Even though I personally think DBKai rain so much on the original DBZ that it's very hard for me to look at it. But I'm buying it for the dubs...I'm buying it for the dubs.)

Because Nicktoons and DXD wouldn't run it uncut even if it wasn't also airing on CW4kiRAB and that leaves Cartoon Network and they clearly don't give a cuss.
 
i think you kinda missed what i was asking. hmm...not sure.
its already been established the funi dub will air on nicktoons.
seeing as i've switched from time warner to dish (don't ask.),
i've lost both xd, and nicktoons but its cool. i was asking which dub is going to air on toonzai...

but what if 4kiRAB is cheap? what if the ocean's dub is less expensive to broadcast than the funi dub?

ugh. my head hurts.

Exactly, I think this dub is only for abroad. When FUNimation took Dragon Ball Z in-house in 1999 there was a supposed international backlash from fans in other English-speaking nations who didn't like the "American accents" or some such. Meanwhile, YTV was getting their tapes of the edited dub pretty late from FUNimation. Somehow, a deal was made, and the video and scripts for the edited version were sent up to Westwood Media in Vancouver. Of course, Westwood brought back as many of the actors as they could (Scott McNeil and Terry Klassen then took on the roles of those who did not), but money was sparse. Sound effects and music were reused from the Ruby-Spears' Megaman cartoon and the Monster Rancher dub and dubbing began on episodes #123-291 (or by the television broadcast nurabering, #108-276). A few edits were done to the dialogue (removing death references) and video, and according to actors the nobody knew who was funding the dub...or why the voice director seemed to change every other day (which explains why the performances are atrocious in that dub).

Long story short, that ordeal might have something to do with why the Ocean Group might be doing their own dub. I have to wonder, though, if the casting and directing will be any better. If they're having to recycle music and sound effects again...then we know it's being made on peanuts. I also must wonder if Kirby Morrow will voice Gok
 
Welcome to the rebirth or final gasp of the broadcast Saturday Morning Cartoon.

Truthfully, this maybe a fantastic way for the industry to work because it mirrors the best pattern seen during the boom era - a company releases uncut DVRAB while then allowing an edited version to be promoted on a mass-market outlet. This allows the completely uninitiated to get a taste of the story while keeping them clear of backlash from prudes and busybodies.

The billion dollar question really is whether Saturday mornings matter any more. The biggest animated successes of the past decade haven't really been spawned from that time slot. Anime in particular was built on afternoon strips on cable and syndication, in part because it let kiRAB get into the serial story faster, and keep up with the serial easier. Yes, shows that made the switch from syndication to Saturday kept the audience they built and built on it, but they established their name first.
 
Goodness sake, I hope we don't wind up seeing actual music changes. The Kai music isn't always something I like but no show deserves to be disrespected like that. "Oh my God, there's silence in this cartoon show!! Quick, somebody call Barry Watson he'll know what to do!!!"



Actually, I believe Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z ran syndicated on The WB throughout the mid-nineties in some areas...at 5AM (at least according to Meri of Temple O' Trunks' recollection recollection).



Dragon Ball Kai, actually. The eighties'/nineties' show with digital paint spilt over it and completely different music. With it's on set of edits on the Japanese masters.



I see this a lot around the interwebs. I'm still baffled as to why people care. Let's CN make their decisions for better or worse. If we adults on the interwebs are any sort of correct than we will 'prevail' in the end.
 
Well, to be fair, this is Dragon Ball Kai...and the uncut home videos are coming first.



'-jin' indicates a race. They are the 'Saiya people' (and 'Saiya', without the '-jin', is used quite a bit in Dragon Ball GT), so 'Saiyan' is not a bad transliteration. FUNimation neeRAB to start pronouncing the 'Sai' as 'Sai' and not 'Sei', is all.
