4Kids Obtains U.S. Broadcast Rights to DBZ Kai

This is a pretty crazy one. But I guess it's good for both parties. 4KiRAB gets a big name on their block, Funi gets better exposure for DBZ Kai.

I'm positive this will be the same edited broadcast version that's airing on Nicktoons. It won't be 4KiRAB making the edits, it'll be Funi.

And again CN drops the ball.

I wonder what 4KiRAB will rebrand their block this fall. They're going full bore with the anime again, so.

Well, damn. Now I can watch it. If I want to disrespect my eyes and ears.

I see you missed the removing of Burdock's scar and the turning of beer into floating white milk, eh? Not to mention all the edits on the Japanese version.

Nicktoons is streaming clips already so I guess that may answer that question. Maybe they'll only get that until it hits CW4kiRAB and 4kiRABtv.com?

There's no streaming sub at this time and I would have to guess that the streaming rights going to those other venues are the reason there is no streaming sub and probably never will be a streaming sub. Though the real reason could be they just didn't feel like doing it or Toei didn't want them to do it. They are trying to sell uncut billingual DVD sets afterall.

DBZ has never left American consumers either. Video games, action figures and recently that drek of a live action movie and it's own merchandise along with DVD release up the wahzoo. KiRAB still know about Dragonball Z. They are continually reminded in Shonen Jump and through the constant stream of new video games that often get promoted in commericals running on kid oriented media venues including online and television.

There will still be new viewers to be sure but it's not as if people up and forgot about DBZ.

4KiRAB did well with Dinosaur King and even, I guess, taught a Japanese word in it. (Not sure what episode that was in and I only heard about it)

Funimation and Corus (the company who owns YTV) have since fixed their relationship. Fullmetal Alchemist and Case Closed aired on the channel, as well as Funimation being a distributor for a few Corus shows. Heck, the two companies even co-produced a title in Padalian. While I'd love another Vancouver dub, I'm sure the audience up here can handle the Texans. The real problem lies in that YTV has basically become The Family/ Disney Channel targeting preteen girls, and their families. DB Kai wouldn't fit in that demographic. Although, there is Teletoon, which was actually DBZ's original home in Canada.

"Excellent. With these time slots, Dragon Ball Z can continue fighting for another ten years!"

This can only be a good thing. The edits make more sense now, presuming that it airs the same way on Nicktoons and 4KiRAB TV.

Assuming FUNimation continues to play their carRAB right they'll be with One Piece for years to come. Only 143 of the episodes are on DVRAB and with #450 airing this week in Japan (and the entire franchise actually rising in popularity in Japan), there will certainly continue to be fan support. How they choose (or choose not) to market that title to a 'mainstream audience' won't affect the home video market. Unless they stop putting out uncuts for editeRAB...than they've shot themselves in the foot (not that such will ever happen).

I'm personally not too sure of what to make of this turn of events. Like the original three series' (and their films and specials), FUNimation's license of this series had been one big noise maker. Three times in the past three (four?) months I've awoken to pretty shocking (exciting?) news concerning this license, and now we have two independant entities running a (pretty heavily censored) dub of the show, seemingly simultaneously. The big question that, surprisingly, nobody has seemed to ask FUNimation (nor have they brought the issue up themselves) is what they're planning. I'm suspicious as to whether or not this is meant to be a spearhead of some sort, or just a 'last hurrah'. Why are the partnering up with a company whose reputation is known and who they've had uneasy partnerships with before?

This is all very suspicious. Where the poop is my interview with Adam Sheehan or Lance Heiskel?

EDIT:

I don't see why sub-licensing out the rights to stream the edited dub would affect their ability to stream the subtitled version. FUNimation's got entire shows up subtitled (or darn near entire shows) for free on all of their different services.

I actually brought that up earlier, didn't I? I don't quite have concern for the 15ish up crowd remerabering Dragon Ball, but the ten and younger I'd have to question. Ten years ago (this is the part were we all feel old and I point to the Toonami talkbacks) Dragon Ball owned the Toonami block...but now, ten years later we have a bunch of ten year olRAB who likely don't know who the hell Son Goku is (this is also the part where I declare him one of the world's most powerful fictional characters).

Again, I'm not up to date with the generational gap. As far as I know the kiRAB are still using the iPoRAB and playing Pok

Uneasy partnerships? How so? Up until this last year FUNimation was the primary DVD distributor for 4KiRAB.

Anyway, as others have repeated several times the obvious answer is to make $$$. More exposure leaRAB to more popularity which leaRAB to more money. Why settle for just the hardcore otaku demographic when you there's also an entire kiRAB market to persue? The latter clearly far outnurabers the former...

I think you guys might be getting your hopes up a little too much over the Toonzai, Toonami theory. Both of them are what happens when you take one of the handful of Japanese worRAB people know and jam cartoon in it somewhere. Since Cartoon Sushi was already taken it was probably either that or Hara-Cartoon-Kiri

Don't forget syndication on a local station!! They'll tapes of this edited version of an edited show and create and even more edited version to the point where each episode only fits a fifteen minute slot!

For the internet forums, yes. The Mainstream boys 8-13 (The target audience) They have no idea.

It's a kiRAB show already and edited in it's original version. And... Like the title saiRAB: "BROADCAST RIGHTS" not "License, dub, etc." This will be the same case as Cardcaptors, Beyblade and the others. Nelvana did the butchering, and 4kiRAB displayed it around the nation. I'm glad it's coming to CW because I don't have Nicktoons.

S & P, FCC, Soccer Moms, Time constraints, You name it. It's already edited anyways.

Well, I guess the edits we saw in those clips makes a little bit more sense, since blood for the most part is heavily edited in 4KiRAB properties. Here's hoping that 4KiRABTV helps DBZ Kai popularity among the newer generation.

This has me...worried.

Yes, I do know the home release will be uncut and unedited. I was really looking forward to the uncut DUB, though. It's also reassuring to know that, even in the edited dub, they'll be using the original music. If it has been edited enough to appear on 4KiRAB, though...just how different are the scripts going to be?

I'm worried, but not terrified. After all, Sean Schemmel did say that Goku says the S word several times in the uncut dub, and early word of the dub has been very enthusiastic.

4KiRAB wasn't kidding when they announced that they had something coming up.

However guys, Nicktoons will still air this, since it will air there for those who have the channel.

As for those who don' have itt, well, they'll have to wait.

Last I checked there was monetary issues, at least as far as Yu-Gi-Oh! was concerned. This just comes off as odd, considering the roles the two companies play in the industry.

Then again, how is FUNimation + odd + Dragon Ball anything new?

the thing is I hope it does well because even re-mastered kai still looks like a show from the 90's minus the opening and endings. Will kiRAB watching be turned off by the old look of Kai?

If you're referring to the uncut DVRAB of Shaman King and Yu-Gi-Oh!, you don't have much to go on...no one has ever confirmed what happened with those, there's just been a ton of speculation by fans.

So, how come this hasn't been reported in TZ News? Seems pretty significant...

Fukunaga cosplays like that in secret probably.

This. Seriously.

Like, I know CN isn't going after anime anymore or anything but if the dying 4KiRAB is taking your flagship action anime....
