I've seen the movie a total of 6 times and I can't believe I haven't posted a review yet so here goes...
27 Dresses is your typical romantic comedy and I don't mean that in a negative way because I'm a woman. I'm genetically programmed to like them.
The story was formulaic but I knew that coming in. Like Katie said, you'd kinda know how the story will end about 5 minutes into the film. I wasn't expecting to see an Oscar-worthy movie. This is a romantic comedy and the day one of those wins an Oscar would probably be the end of Oscar credibility.
While the the movie had it's share of Rom-Com cliches, I did like that they kind of deviated from the genre a little bit. First of all, Jane wasn't your usual ugly duckling. They darkened her hair a little but but they didn't make her so unattractive that it's easy to believe that no man would ever want her. She still looked good to me, if a bit uncomfortable in her skin. Maybe that was intentional, maybe not, but if it was then I salute them. They made Katie's understated acting tell the story. They didn't force us to believe that she's an ugly duckling who suddenly becomes a beautiful swan with a little mascara and a change of wardrobe. Which brings me to the second thing I liked----NO MAKEOVERS!!! :hurray:
Third, the other guy (a.k.a. George) wasn't the shallow, typical man's man we always see in these love triangles. He was a good guy and at times, he even made Kevin look like the bad guy. That made Jane's dilemma even harder. How would one choose between this great guy and the other great guy?
My fourth thing is, Jane is not perfect. She's not always a good girl like Rom-Com heroines tend to be. She can fight underhandedly like the time she was trying to expose Tess' lies on that baseball field or the time she suggested registering for the ugliest things in the store for Tess. She can also be straightforward. She told Tess to come clean when she found out about the lies before exposing her in that slideshow. I liked that Jane has a little dark side to her. It kept her from being one-dimensional.
Fifth, Jane's life is not in shambles. She is successful, she has a job she likes, she has a great apartment that's really big for NYC standards and, as we learn at the end of the movie, her perfect "pretty" sister envies her. I envy her myself. Everyone has love problems but not everyone in NYC has an apartment like hers. Lastly, while Jane is a pushover most of the time, she does know how to fight. She can be assertive when she wants to be. No pushover can be an unofficial wedding planner for all those weddings. She proved that the time she was forcing the baker to give Tess her dream wedding cake.
I wasn't expecting to be blown away by the performances because---lets' face it---they didn't have much to work with story-wise. I did like the acting, though. Katie really made me believe that she's insecure. Her every glance and every gesture radiated lack of confidence. Even her posture hinted at it. Her acting was very understated in this movie, no hint of Izzie at all, and I loved that. She did a good job. The supporting characters did well too. James was very charming as the leading man (with that 100 watt smile that can slay). Ed was cute as the boss Jane is in love with (and I totally understand why). Malin was also good as Jane's bratty sister.
I liked the movie overall. It's a feel-good movie. Its's a little escapist but isn't that what rom-com's are for? Besides, if you want a good laugh, that bar scene is totally worth the ticket.
