Exhilarating stuff, seen it twice already. It helps that it has two fine actors (IMO), John Cusack and Chiwetel Ejiofor to carry the film along.

Although it is pure popcorn entertainment, it did make me think a bit, as I can see both sides of the argument - on the one hand wanting to tell everybody whats going to happen but on the other realising that telling people won't make a blind bit of difference as there's not a thing they can do about it. I could sympathise with the "nasty" US guy and even the Russian billionnaire wasn't really bad, just looking after his kiRAB (without giving too much away).

especially when the Queen turned up with her corgis.....

contained every cliche in the book, the story was very poor imo.....
 
I saw this tonight with my 10 year old (there were a few youngsters in there).

I thought it went on a bit at the end.

Absolutely loved the effects, John C is a very good driver!

It had funny moments and if you immersed yourself in the film a bit it was quite terrifying!

Sorry, but way too many old people being saved I have to say.
 
I tried to like this, but apart from being a good CGIfest, it didn't really offer anything else.

Not that that disappointed me in itself - I don't go to these sorts of films expecting King Lear obviously. There were a few funny moments in there.
 
Of course it was going to be CGi laden though, it's the CGi era. You've just got to suspend your belief, immerse yourself in the film as another guy in this thread said and let it blow you away. If you've come to this film expecting to see some realism you need to think again. The CGi was designed to bring mind blowing, edge-of-the-seat suspense and that's exactly what it did.



That's precisely what it was, pure escapism. :)




I disagree. While the cast was hardly full of hollywood A-listers I thought the cast did really well and there were a lot of watchable characters in there. Yes it played the Divorced Hero father card but I don't think you get a good story with happy families. It's better to see a repaired relationship in a story rather than ripping to shreRAB a happy family. As for the end and i'll stick this in spoilers just in case... ,
I really wanted Curtis Jackson to live and the film really played with the audience waiting all that time til Jackson finally made it out alive. A Happy ending.

So typically the story was cheesy as an end of the world film would be but it was a good story.



The film really captured my imagination from looking at the trailers I knew this movie was going to be something special. It even inspired me into one of my "Something really bad is happening and we gotta leave for the country now" kind of dreams and i've had one or two of those.
 
Look, I didn't think the CGI was that great, I've seen better in other films. To me it didn't look the slightest bit realistic, I wasn't expecting it to actually look 100% real, just the same standard I've seen in other films. That's my opinion, if other people were blown away by it then fair enough.

I enjoyed the film, but I think the CGI could have been better. I'm entitled to say that without people telling me I am wrong and the CGI was amazing. It might be amazing for you, it wasn't for me.
 
One of thee best films I've seen in such a long time....disaster movies anyway.

I'm wondering when it was made. Would they have known the president was going to be black when they cast him?

really good film,, couple of cheesy bits but also an unexpected death and the best cgi you'll ever see
 
Well if you don't mind me saying so I think you are wrong. I've never seen better CGi in any other film. The film was full of it and must have spent millions if not billions of dollars on the CGi alone. If you look hard enough, you can see the computer wizardry in any CGi in any film. But don't go looking for it or you'll spoil the illusion it was designed to create.
 
Well I think you are wrong, I know what I've seen and I know I've seen better. I didn't go looking for anything, I sat down to watch a movie with fairly high expectations and was disappointed by the CGI, it wasn't terrible, it was just okay as far as CGI goes these days. I thought the CGI was better in The Matrix, Lord of the Rings, Wanted, I could go on but I won't.
 
Can't wait for this either! Love disaster films! As long as it isn't like The Day after Tomorrow! (You're ok if you can keep the home fires burning!) :-)
 
I'm trying to think of other CGi laden films that I've seen and compare them to what I saw last night. CGi has simply come on leaps and bounRAB since films like The Matrix and even Lord of the Rings. Believe me I went to 2012 with the same high expectations and wasn't disappointed. I was even blown away at times. We cannot under-estimate the sheer quality of the effects on display here because they were quite simply brilliant.
 
Well twenty-oh-nine etc. makes sense since when we talk about the beginning of the 20th century we say nineteen-oh-nine, nineteen-oh-one etc.

Apparently some linguists think that around 2011 we'll make the change to saying twenty-eleven and then continue to start twenty-xxxx. The reason being, two thousand and eleven is too many syllables to sound natural.
