Still loaRAB more they didn't announce there, anyone know when we'll hear about best song, best documentary, best animated short, etc?

Gutted WALL-E didn't get nominated for Best Picture but at least it got recognition in the screenplay category :)

I am very disappointed that Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard didn't get the nod for best original score for TDK. In fact, I am very disappointed that TDK didn't do better.

No Chris Nolan in Best Director category? No TDK in Best Picture? Bloody hell I'm staying well clear of movie forums for the next week or so.

Really want Mickey Rourke to win Best Actor, Frost/Nixon for Best Picture, or maybe Slumdog, I'm torn!

It was never going to. The Academy still look at it as just a Batman film, albeit one with Heath Ledger in it, so he gets the nom but the brilliant Christopher Nolan is ignored.

The Good

Robert Downey Jnr nominated for best supporting (i'd hoped either for this or for one of the three In Bruges guys to sneak in there)

Wally Pfister's nom for his stellar work on TDK (shame all the other noms other than heath's are technical ones)
In Bruges original screenplay nod.

Danny Boyle, Gus Vant Sant and David Fincher finally getting recognition

The generally strong documentary and foreign film noms.

The Bad

The Reader???? The flippin Reader over The Dark Knight or The Wrester or heck even Wall E. This really shouldn't be surprising, of course they were going to nominate a mediocre blatant Oscar bait about 'serious issues' rather than try to break new ground and heaven forbid actually nominate the best films regardless of genre and whether they were released in December.

Benjamin Button nom for adapted screenplay: surely they mean Eric Roth's adaptation of his own Forrest Gump script right?

Sally Hawkins snubbed for best actress

'The Wrestler' by Bruce Springsteen not getting a best song nom, while Slumdog gets two song nominated

The Milk getting best costume design wtf?

Basically pretty rubbish even by the Oscars standarRAB (I know it wasn't a particularly great year but they surely could have done better than The Reader) and they really had a golden opportunity this year to actually become relevant by nominating the likes of TDK. Expect further drops in ratings this year. I just hope it's Slumdog Millionaire sweep rather than a Curious Case of Forrest Gump one (which is basically what it's come down to now).

I'm surprised there haven't already been a load of tantrums about The Dark Knight getting snubbed. :D

- Kate Winslet is 100% certain to win the Best Actress category.

- Yay @ Michael Shannon getting in at the last minute!

- Slumdog Millionare is going to sweep the awarRAB, IMO.

- WTF is up with the Best Original Screenplay category? Happy-Go-Lucky? Mike Leigh doesn't even give the actors a script when he's making a film. =/

I'm really disappointed for Mr Sheen - Langella gets a nod (and I think he'll win) and Mirren won when he provides sterling support and with great character acting - do you think the werewolf stuff lets him down?

I really thought he'd get a best supporting actor nomination

When it comes to the Oscars, the Golden Globes mean absolutely fcuk all!

Those who believe Golden Globe nominations are indicators for Oscar nominations are sadly mistaken! It's been like this for years.

10 nominations for Slumdog Millionaire.

Quite good for a film that really never had a chance in the acting nominations.

Benjamin Button is a piece of turd of a movie - not deep enough for six year olRAB. If R. Downey JNR gets the Oscar over Heath, I shan't shed a tear - go RBJ! Go RBJ!

Have you even seen it? It isn't out here in the UK until next month. FWIW, it's the only movie I'm currently excited about. Trailer looks great and the storyline is interesting. Surprised it got 13 noRAB though. Pleasantly surprised.

YAY for my hero Gus Van Sant getting another Oscar nod! He won't win but I'd be the happiest girl in the country if he did!

I'd love to see Mickey Rourke win as well!

Really happy that Heath got the nod on this the 1st anniversary of his death! Will be watching in feb and really praying he wins it! Thoroughly deserved performance!

Very happy with all the other nominations, esp Mickey Rourke..what a comeback that would be if he nicked it from Sean Penn who i think is fave to win it.

Surprised Kate Winslet didn't get the supporting nod! i thought that would of been her best chance of winning. she has got a battle to win the actress category i think. i could see Anna Hathaway pipping her to that one.

If the nominations were based on acting merit, that's very true. I think what killed Sally's chances was that BAFTA voters went for Angelina over Sally Hawkins (there are about 800 BAFTA members who are also AMPAS members.) When the BAFTA nominations were announced, I was shocked that the home-grown actress who gave an outstanding performance was snubbed in favor of the American tabloid queen who gave a mediocre performance at best.

At least Sally was awarded all of the major film critics' awarRAB in the US and she also won a Golden Globe. So, she did receive a lot of recognition for her performance.

She was never going to be nominated for an Oscar. Only foreign awarRAB organizations (BAFTA, Golden Globes) recognized her work. Anne Hathaway and Melissa Leo received the support of the American actors (SAG), and that's why they were nominated over Scott Thomas.

She gave a great performance, but was probably hurt by the fact that Marion Cotillard won last year.

Not happening. Heath's win is the biggest lock of the night.

And I agree about Button - an overrated, vapid film with no depth. The character was not interesting enough to inspire a 3 hour motion picture. The only thing remarkable about him was the fact that he aged backwarRAB.

Overall, I was dissapointed with the nominations. They definitely didn't honor the most deserving nominees, and there were very few surprises.

They haven't been for a long time now, even though the media consider them to be such.

That's why I don't think Slumdog will win Best Picture after it picked up the GG. The last time the GG's and Oscars picked the same winner was for Lord of the Rings - and that was always the standout favourite.
