2007 Kawasaki Ninja 650 - Shifting Problems?

Some "Neighbor" knocked over 2 motorcycles the other night, one happened to be mine. I don't care too much about the minor cosmetic damage to the fairing, but I can't get the bike to shift into 2nd. Bike shop told me it may be a bent shifter... what do you guys think?

More info: I can start the bike, and put it in neutral and 1st. However, the bike never registers it's in neutral (as in, I can't put the kickstand down w/o killing it and the neutral light doesn't come on.... but it is in neutral).

Any suggestions?
Thanks 600RRGuy. Yeah - I know the kickstand issues doesn't sound right, but I assure you it is. Even if I put the bike in neutral, I still have to start it like I'm starting in gear. Weird, huh?

I'll take a look at some of the items you brought up. I used to have an old '92 suzuki that I would do occasional work on... so I'm not terrible out of my element; but I haven't dealt with this before. I've got the manual to the bike, so that should help too. If I get too lost I suppose I can take it to the shop; insurance will cover it... but I'd prefer not to have to go through them.

Thanks to all for the answers! Let me know if you have any other ideas!
