Hi, i have a 2001 kawasaki ninja 498cc and when i upshift i think im sometimes upshifting at too much of a high gear. when i bought my bike it came with like customized exhaust i think its called so its a lot louder so i dunno if im doin it right or wrong. and also sometimes when i upshift my bike jerks, or it goes smooth, or it just makes a clicking noise. so i dunno if im not turning the throttle high or low enough when i go to a high shift or something else im doin wrong. thanks to anyone who can help me out.

You want to learn throttle and clutch control.

Right hand is the throttle, left lever is the clutch.

Shifting can be done anywhere the bike makes power, likely 2000 rpm's or higher.

When you are ready to up-shift to a higher gear, you quickly roll your right wrist forward which shuts off the throttle. At the same time you pull in the clutch lever with your left hand. If you didn't roll off the throttle the engine would race higher.

When the above is complete you lift the shift lever with your left foot firmly and then let the shift lever drop, so it shifts into the next higher gear and the shift lever drops back into place. Then you release the clutch lever with your left hand and roll on the throttle with your right. You are trying to do this so it does not jerk the bike, so you are trying to match the engine rev's with the speed of the bike. Rolling the throttle on helps stop the forward jerking. It takes practice, try doing this in an empty parking lot where traffic is not a concern.

if you haven't taken the MSF basic rider course, sign up for it now.

If you've already taken it, I'm not sure what exactly makes you think you're doing anything wrong... Is the bike not functioning properly, or it's just not operating smoothly?

if it's just jerky, that's likely something you'll get better at with time.

also be sure to check out www.ex-500.com The whole site is devoted to your bike, and if there IS actually something mechanically wrong, instructions to fix it will be on that site.

Sounds like your shifting co-ordination is not quite on target. If the bike jerks or makes a clicking noise you definately are not doing it right.
