200 greatest guitarists in rock

I can honestly say (or should I say I think) he wouldnt make my top 200. Its a tall order to even compile a list but I highly doubt he would make it anywhere near.

hey gilmore proved that ages before colbain. i personally find colbain really boring. its not that he doesnt wank his brains out, its that i dislike his phrasing

Speaking of art rock, there really wasn't much distinguishing the two terms back in the 70s. It was used to describe Genesis just as often as it was used to describe Roxy Music.

If OK Computer and Kid A were released in the 70s they would undeniably be considered prog albums.

But now of course prog is a term used to describe banRAB that take obvious influence from other prog banRAB. So it's very common to see a bunch of tarRAB saying "Radiohead are not prog, I can't hear any Yes or Genesis influences at all".

That's a pretty good description, though I love Rush, they're an obvious inlfluence on Dream Theater. But overall DT do remind me more of Kansas and Toto with a metal twist.

I don't consider Toto to be much of a prog band actually. In the late 70s you had arena rock banRAB like Journey and Toto erabracing some prog influences but when these banRAB get lumped into the same category it's quite erabarassing.

I think of banRAB like Kansas and Styx as being lite prog or commercial prog, a corabination of prog and arena rock. And yes, DT reminRAB me a lot more of Kansas and Styx than they do King Crimson and Yes. And the saddest part is...

Kansas and Styx are still way better.

Heh if anything progressive metal is more metal than it is prog. At least in my opinion.

Yeah I agree. I mean I could care less about foreign and economic policies.... I'm voting for the guy who hates Malmsteen and hopes he dies.

This is kind of amusing actually.

i just realized you have J. Mascis at #103. seems a little strange to be below D. Boon, wouldn't you say?

and i thought you liked him. :(

Heres my top 10 list. ALL OF YOU WHO COMPLAIN ABOUT A LACK OF FEELING IN THIS LIST, HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA WHAT THE DIFFERENCE IS BETWEEN THE TERMS GUITARIST AND MUSICIAN, SO IF YOU'RE ABOUT TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THAT CRAP, GO DIE. PLENTY OF THESE PLAYERS HAVE BOTH ANYWAY, BUT I JUST KNOW SOMEBODY IS GONNA BITCH.

1 - Guthrie Govan - By FAR the most versatile, technical, and generally excellent all around guitar player I have ever seen. He can improvise the kinRAB of melodic structures most guitarists can't even comprehend, and he's absolutely demonic when it comes to note perfect accuracy and clean playing.

2 - Rusty Cooley - For all out SPEED, nobody can come anywhere close to Rusty. Musically, he's pretty boring (Although Dark Matter shows at least SOME promising musical elements), but the man plays faster than ANYONE ELSE I HAVE EVER SEEN. Note: These videos are NOT sped up. He actually plays this fast.

3 - Mattias Eklundh - He's wierd, he's hilarious, and he plays the impossible. Not the fastest, as Shawn Tiago and Rusty will demonstrate, but my GOD does he ever manage to bend that guitar of his into doing some wierd ****. He uses a harmonic map of the fretboard to play notes VASTLY higher than the standard range of a guitar, and he does it with disturbing dexterity.

4 - Shawn Lane - He's actually NOT a favourite of mine, but he's here because his technical skill is undeniable and because plenty of people think he made beautiful music. One of only 2 people I've seen get even within spitting distance of Rusty's speed.

5 - Tiago Della Vega
This guy is the second of the 2 I mentioned a moment ago. He practically makes economy of movement into an artform. Generally its difficult to tell when his fingers are fretting notes, because he sets his action so low and he's practiced an absurd amount to reduce any extraneous movement in his playing.

6 - Michael Romeo - He's awesome. He's fantastically technical, he has great phrasing and feeling, he's extremely accurate, and he's the guitar player for arguably the best band ever.

7 - Paul Gilbert - The man is a string skipping alternate picking GOD.

8 - Michael Hedges - He's awesome. Speed isn't his technical forte (Though he certainly has it), but the sheer level of coordination required to even begin playing his music is insane, and his use of harmonics is awesome to behold. Good voice too. The second vid isn't of him, but the sound quality is so much better than the hedges recording on youtube, I used it instead.

9 - Tommy Emmanuel - This man, possibly Hedges excluded, SCHOOLS EVERYONE ELSE AT ACOUSTIC GUITAR. FULL STOP.

10 - Phil Keaggy - Just freakin watch.

Blues guitar is the epitome of playing with emotion. If you don't get it, tough luck. A lot more people will have greater emotional responses from a Jimi Hendrix or a B.B. King than John Petrucci.

Btw, this list isn't based on technicality. Even if it was, John Petrucci probably wouldn't make top 10.

Agreed, I can remeraber back in the early 80`s when prog was supposedly dead but Marillion were a huge band in the UK and were labelled neo prog rock and had hordes of adoring fans. In reality, listening to Marillion was just like listening to Peter Gabriel era Genesis and there was absolutely nothing original or new about them, but the fact that they sounded like Genesis deemed them the new prog rock masters label of the 80's. In fact the most progressive artist at that time in the UK was certainly Kate Bush but she was labelled "Art Rock".

It now becomes clear, how a band like Radiohead have achieved the "Art Rock" label and not prog............Quite simply they don`t sound like anybody before them.

Trey Spruance (Mr. Bungle, Faith No More)
Brian Welch (KoRn)

I'm by no means a Nu Metal fan, but there is no denying Spruance and Welch's influence...

Nah. Frusciante is very calculated and sparse with his guitar work. Hendrix had a characteristic sloppiness that bled into his songwriting. I don't think I've ever heard a Frusciante song/solo that didn't have firm direction.

Steve Ray Vaughn should be a little higher, and Duane Allman should be a little higher too.

Am I the only one who thinks Hendrix shouldn't be first? I like Duane and JBeck over him. Definitly top 5 though.

EDIT: HolRABworth is great. Don't take him out. His stuff on the second Bruford album (the name escapes me) is great.
