200 greatest guitarists in rock

Hey, I don't wanna come off saying that you are stupid, Hackett is a hell of a guitarist. But to think petrucci is a robot, or IMO putting him in anything below ten is a travesty. But that second part is subjective!
 
I didn't say I wanted him off the list. I just took a semi-random person from the top 20 and suggested that he could be replaced by Neil Young, which I prefer over Brian May.
 
I've never understood why people rate Clapton so highly. I find his guitar playing extremely uninteresting and it seems fairly derivative to me.

well...taste in style matters a lot which makes this list even harder to make

BUT

when lists of "best/most skilled" guitarists come out we're also talking in terms of innovation and what they have offered to the musical world. The less well known the guitarist is, chances are, the less they've offered to the musical world. Especially now that guitarists arent just a dime a dozen, they're a dime for every 200.

granted, you're probably right there...

clapton...a personal opinion...just never thought the man deserved his kudos in the face of much more interesting guitarists
to me its just sub par bb king rehashed as rock music
 
He was a big influence on Hendrix, Page and all the others. He along with Beck and Hendrix did a lot to reinvent the electric guitar for the hard rock era. He's not as original as the others, (though the fuzzy tone he achieved with albums like Wheel of Fire and Disraili Gears were pretty unique for the time) but he makes up for that in every other field IMO.
 
Fair enough... I can agree to that.

Because that's who the newer guitarists were influenced by... it's called respect. You can't just go pulling the foundation of rock music out from under the newer guys that you like... the whole thing would collapse.
 
I agree, I myself have never quite understood what makes Hendrix such a 'shoe-in' at #1. But it's not my list so I can't change it. You could always try pleading your case to booboo, he seem's like a pretty reasonable guy.




No, and I'm sure Pete Townshend shouldn't be drouped with these guys.

Again this is a greatest guitarist list, not a best guitarist list, which is really a more subjective topic. Not saying this is completely objective of course.

This list would be very different if it were only my personal preference. Chuck Berry above Steve Howe in preference? Puleeeeze. I admit my biases have factored in a little bit, particularly the lower placement of metal shred guitarists. But overall I try to push my own subjective opinions aside and think about how much overall importance and impact a guitarist has.

With Frusciante, he's a great player. But people overstate his importance quite a bit just because he's a big name, I often see him topping guitarist lists, usually way ahead of players like Hazel and Cropper, with Jimmy Nolen and D Boon not getting any mention whatsoever. Frusciante wouldn't even exist without those guys.
 
It is a shame yeah, he was a damn fine guitarist. I have the Funkadelic recorRAB from his era and his solo album but I havent heard Michael Hampton yet to be fair, who was hired to replace him. I even have quite a few Funkadelic recorRAB with him on lead guitar I just haven't gotten into them yet. I've been too heavily in love with the first three Funkadelic recorRAB that I haven't been ready to move on yet.



So, in a list of TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTEEN guitarists Slash doesnt even make the cut? Come on, at least be realistic about it.

Hell, even the mention of Dimebag ****ing Darrell angers me to no end but not because he wasn't a good, capable guitarist but because I feel he was and still is OVER rated. He'd be in my top 200. He'd probably be in my top 100.

hmmm......i can see what you mean that it's not just a bunch of wanking, but to be honest it's a bit stale, like it lacks kind of an identity, you know what i mean? but yeah, that's kinda why i'm not into DT, they're good technically at their respective instruments, but it's a bit souless to me, like they don't really try putting themselves into their playing and just do textbook riRAB and patterns to get by.


anyway, that's my opinion. not trying to get into some crazy arguement, seeing as it's 1:30 am right now, haha
