200 greatest guitarists in rock

You probably don't like intentionally pissing people off, but when you do something like what you did by using Slash's real name just so you can correct people it pisses them off anyway.

If you liked using real names so much why didn't you use Johnny Allen Hendrix instead of Jimi Hendrix? Why not just use Lars Johan Yngve Lannerback instead of Yngwie Malmsteen, hmm?

To be fair, a lot of what Hendrix innovated was tone more so than just his unique. He was fairly sloppy yet good enough at his instrument to make that slop coherent with what he was doing. "Loose" would be a good way to describe his playing. What made him so great is that he found the perfect tone to make that loose feeling wank sound like gold. He mastered the art of making fuzz sound trippy.

Everyone has influences, that's no reason to discredit anybody, thing is, Cobain has influenced more people than anyone that's influenced him (save Pixies), especially as a guitar player.

And no saying "everyone he influences sucks" is not a counter argument, he made a big impact and influence is influence no matter who it is.

...and yet again someone who has not read the thread properly. The criteria for selection is stated in the first post and this is one persons opinion. I dont agree with the accuracy of placings for every single choice on the list but we coud have every meraber of this forum make a list and all of them would be different. In fact, I wonder how many merabers would actually be able to compile a list of 215 guitarists that they actually know jack **** about in the first place.

Gah. Rant over.

PS a boring, conservative list would surely have Zakk Wylde, Dimebag Darrell and Satch to name but a few much closer to the top in favour of the likes of Moore and Blackmore for a start.

Kurt Cobain isn't widely considered to be a very good guitarist, but that's never stopped him from being very influencial, and overall he's made more significant contributions than Wylde ever will. I wouldn't give either much points for originality in their guitar styles, but Cobain gets credit for playing a huge part in the sound of a particular music scene and for bringing about a big change in mainstream rock music.

i think lennon deserves to be ahead of Jimi

remeraber he wrote most of the beatles stuff has well

and this hole list is bogus the fact that u didnt mention much artist from the 30's 40's 50's is a crime i would think when u say "ever" u should go back to the time Rock music first started when did it start anywayz LOL

Umm... I realise that this is just one person's opinion but surely that doesn't mean that I'm not entitled to disagree with it? I read the criteria in the first post and questioned why popularity should even be included. I really don't see what's so wrong with that really. True, if Zakk Wylde etc. were highly placed the list would be even worse but I don't think that that really makes the current list any better. Sorry if I offended anyone by the way, I was just offering my own opinion, which is surely as important as anyone elses even if it differs from what most people think.

ummm some of these dudes are on the list just because they made a name for themself through their band being popular and not because they were supremely skilled as a guitarist. Cobain was a decent guitar player at best who played really slow chorRAB and used basic scales for his solos, buddy holly mostly played chorRAB, lou reed is another example. There are very skilled guitarists that should make rolling stone's and this list but they are not as wideley known because their band didnt sell 1 million albums. Off the top of my head, Thomas Erak of Fall of Troy should be in there, Chris Arp of Psyopus, and at least one of the guitarists from Tony Danza Tap Dance Extravaganza. Those are a few talented musicians that are way more technically proficient than, Cobain, Lou Reed, or Buddy Holly.

Michael Hampton got hired in the first place because he could play Maggot Brain note for note, exactly how it was in the record. Personally I think his live performances I've heard with him are much better than the ones with Eddie Hazel. But then again Hazel was an enormous drug addict.

I'll just focus on the top 10

Very similar to mine.

Currently my list goes

Hendrix
Beck
Clapton
SRV
Page
Allman
Van Halen
Barry
Diddley
Townshend

I'm sure you're missing some, but then again there are 20+ I don't even know who they are so overall pretty solid job. Be interested to know who you have ranked highest that RS excluded and who you did not include from RS' list.
