A few things.
He would be a good candidate for #1, IF Hendrix didn't exist, Page has obviously accomplished a lot, that's why he's in the top 5. But overall it can't be denied that as far as influence, innovation and universial appeal goes, Hendrix is the obvious choice for nuraber 1.
Also. I wouldn't consider longevity a real good reason. CC Deville has been playing guitar a lot longer than say Randy RhoaRAB or Shawn Lane. That surely doesn't make him greater than them.
It's not how long you have been playing, it's what you've accomplished in the time you have been playing. And lets be honest, Page hasn't really done anything noteworthy post-Zep. But that doesn't matter, it's what he accomplished in the 60s and 70s that earns him his place, and so while Hendrix only lived to enjoy his popularity for a few years, he accomplished a lot more than most guitarists could ever dream of in just that short amount of time.

That's rasonabl, Gilmour would prbably be my numer one, but Page wouldn't be too far behind, I would actuall be interested in seeing a list from you.

Naturally I haven't heard enough of all guitarists to write down a good/fair list, but at least I have to say that John Petrucci is easily my favourite guitarist. ^^ Not only because he's very fast and play lots of different styles well, but also because his songwriting is really appealing to me.

Yeah he also had a couple really nice stand out tracks of his own, Cortez the Killer was a great guitar piece of his.

I actually think that Petrucci cover was quite good except for when those other two idiots joined in.
Im glad to see Eddie Hazel, John Squire and Johnny Marr represented. They often get left off these kind of lists.
All of the guitarists I would include have been included.
I always thought James Dean Bradfield was under-rated. His band was all about the songwriting and even as a frontman he never took the spotlight but some of his guitar work was pretty decent.
He would be way, way, way down on my list of 200 though, I'm not getting carried away or anything.

I am going to thank God everyday that I don't have a music outlook like you.
First of all, if you don't think they are prog than I think that disqualifies you from all discussion. They have delved into every facet of progressive rock and if you listen to Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, Scenes from a Memory, or Octavarium, and you find these guys don't play prog then you are deaf.
And yes, repetition is bad. Artists should explore, and produce new things. I think one of the things that appeals to me about DT is that their only goal is to push the limits and play something that sounRAB good.
I think that if any well known pop artists had their talent, and knowledge of theory, they would take their musical outlook. Jimmy page simply doesn't know how to do some of the things that Petrucci can. I am not saying that DT is better than Zep, I am simply saying that where Page's talent enRAB, Petrucci has the ability to explore and extract more out of the guitar.

I have to say i'm surprised by the inclusion of Glen Buxton. Did you know he didn't record anything with Alice Cooper after Schools Out?
All his guitar parts were either recorded by Dick Wagner or Mick Mashbir. In fact they added Mashbir as a third guitarist on the Billion Dollar Babies tour because Buxton couldn't play any of the new material.
