20 Animated Films Submitted to Oscars; 5 Nominations Seem Likely

I haven't seen an inch of advertisement about this film. What is it and why do people think it has a chance to get nomianted? Will it be like Persepolis, a movie I never heard about until after it was nominated for an Oscar but not winning it and then discovering it on TV on the Wam! Network?

Don't bet on it. Personally, I think most critics weren't in love with the film even if they did the research on how Astro Boy came from being a '50's icon to just being an average superhero in a world that pays more attention to glory hogs such as Miley Cyrus and the cast from Twilight. While some of us remember who he was and what he stood for, chances are that some people could care less for the film despite being number 8 in its first week in theaters even though the film was heavily advertised from Cartoon Network to ESPN. Personally, the film was empty as I stated before in the Astro Boy (2009) Discussion Thread. The same goes for 9, another animated film that I wouldn't mind seeing again or maybe owning due to how the animation is pretty good even if some of the critics weren't that crazy about the story.

So I will have to agree that Miyazaki, Disney/Pixar, 2-D Disney are already at5 the top pier of who will be nominated for Best Animated Film category for next year.

If Princess and Frog is good then it has a chance. I was reading recently that if Up gets a best picture nomination it's likely to lose the animation award since voters think it has a shot to win the top prize. Plus, since Princess and Frog is hand-drawn, people might vote for it just to give it a boost. Wallace and Gromit already won for stop-motion, so maybe it's hand-drawn's turn to win something.

I could see that working out. And CWACOM would make a great spoiler/dark horse in the nominations. While I don't think it would win, a nomination would be fantastic, considering it was a real surprise hit in the box office.

Honestly tho', all of those movies -except 'Frog', which isn't out yet and i have not seen; ergo I can't really give an opinion on it yet- deserve to win. I can't think of a single lame duck among those particular ones above (which would be my nominations)

It's been a pretty exceptional year for animated features, so I'd actually love to see five nominees this year, although I'd prefer it if the cream-of-the-crop 'toons were allowed to sit at the grown-up's table with the real BP nominees (and with ten slots to fill this year, I'd be surprised to not see at least Up get a BP nod).

It's been a good year for animation, I agree that Cloudy won't win but it's chances of getting of getting a nomination are quite good. It was a great film and I hope it gets recognition at the Annies as well.

Wonder if A Matter of Loaf and Death will get nominated for best short as it wasn't included last time.

The idea of Fantastic Mr. Fox getting a nom is an eye-roller. Looks absolutely awful. Wouldn't put it past the academy to nominate it, though, in the name of "diversity" (it being created by a method diverse from CGI or hand-drawn - stop-motion), but I think the general public won't love it. Whereas everyone I know who's seen Astro Boy have loved it and been greatly surprised that they love it. You don't have to be an anime/manga fan to get into the story at all - it touches chords that reverberate throughout all humanity - and the production design is spectacular. *shrug* It'd be nice if the academy would give it a boost but I'm not expecting miracles.

Nominations Locks:

Ponyo
Up

---------------------------------------------------------------------

I predict that two of the following five movies will be nominated.

Coraline
Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs
The Princess and the Frog
The Fantastic Mr. Fox
Planet 51

Both "Coraline" and "Cloudy" have already opened to high praise. As for the other three movies, I want to see them for myself before I decide about them. Everyone expects "Princess" to be great, but let's see for sure. "Mr. Fox" has both a lot of defenders and a lot of haters. And I've heard some praise for "Planet 51".

----------------------------------------------------------------------

And I boldly predict that one of the following three movies will be nominated.

Mary and Max
The Secret of Kells
A Town Called Panic

All three of these limiteds have gotten praise. I regret that M&M got only a nominal release. I would've liked to have seen it on the big screen. I hope "The Secret of Kells" at least gets a limited run.

Here are the websites for the more obscure movies.

Mary and Max
The Secret of Kells
A Town Called Panic
The Missing Lynx
The Dolphin - The Story of a Dreamer

Uh, no. "Spirited Away" won the 2002 Oscar in a year where there was no Pixar movie. (I still think "Lilo and Stitch" should've won instead.) "Finding Nemo" won the 2003 Oscar. OTOH, "Shrek" (bleah) beat "Monsters, Inc." for the 2001 Oscar.
