2 tears in labrum have some questions

My husband is in AGONY and was finally diagnosed through an MRI he has 2 tears in his labrum, front and back, so we determined it is a "SLAP" injury...now the Dr said it is 6-12 months to see a specialist and even then he said the spec. may not decide to even do surgery! I mean he is not able to do anything, has 2 diagnosed tears and is in severe pain, why would a Dr NOT do surgery???this is appalling as my husband can't even live his life anymore due to pain! our family Dr said the spec. will look at the MRI results and do some other testing and then decide if he needs surgery, is this correct do u know?! i mean one would think that the injury was obvious enough to the MRI team as they didn't even need to place dye in it because they saw the tear right away! Our family Dr said the spec may just tell him to live with it depending on the severity, this is SEVERE! to me this is NOT acceptable we WANT the surgery and it is VERY obvious these are serious tears! My husband is young, 38, we don't know how it happened and he CAN NOT be expected to go the rest of his life suffering and potentially getting addicted to pain killers! he no longer enjoys life, is depressed and can not even lift a bag of groceries...he does not sleep, can not concentrate, he has to go through this only to potentially have NOTHING done but to be told to live with it! Is my family Dr possibly incorrect over what this specialist may or may not do? i do know it is a SEVERE tear...our family Dr is an excellent Dr but obviously this is not his specialty so...i am just at my wits end and don't know what to do or how my husband can even do some form of pain control in the meantime at home other than pills and ice! ANY help would be amazing...he has just been told to take T4's and deal with it! This is actually an extremely painful condition and i am very upset nothing is really being done and no one seems to understand the SEVERE impact it is having on his life!

My suggestion is a simple one. Get your films and see a different doctor.
What you've spoken about is just one doctor's opinion. You need to find a doctor more in tune with your husband's pain and quality of life.

Good luck! Sue

Your hubby needs to see an orthopedic surgeon. Your family doctor may be right that the surgeon won't do anything. If it is not severe enough in his opinion, it may do more harm than good by doing surgery.

If your husband has to wait to see the surgeon, ask that he be referred to a pain management dotor or clinic. He can be given meds or other modalities to help with the pain.

Many of us live with pain 24/7 and still lead normal lives. My surgeon told me that I will live with some degree of pain the rest of my life do to my back breaking after my first 3 level fusion. I will take meds to control the pain for the rest of my life. And we don't get addicted. Addiction is when you take the meds for the rush you get from them. Dependancy is what you get when you take the drugs because of pain and to control it. There is a great difference between them..

I don't know if you are able to switch doctors, but you might want to so you can find if it is as bad as you think. Perhaps he might have an in to another specialist also.
