1998 Kawasaki Vulcan 500: For a bigger rider?

My friend is looking for his 1st motorcycle. And we have found a good deal on a 98 Kawasaki Vulcan 500. I think they have around, what 45-50 hp? My concern is my friend might be a little too big for the bike. He weighs around roughly 300-310 pounds. Will the bike be able to do highway speeds ok with him on it? Would 80 or 90 mph be out of the question?
