I think Vine's on record as saying that he found the bit leading up to the laugh so nerve-wracking that he decided to shorten his jokes to the point where he could get laugh-laugh-laugh.
My opinion is that for the storytelling, observational sort of comedy, you need a huge charisma. In the end, people come as much to bask in your charisma as to hear your jokes: I'm sure this is true of the likes of Connolly, Izzard, and Gervais--none of whose material would be transferable to other acts.
Jimmy Carr, however, has minimal charisma but excellent, intelligent jokes and audience awareness. If you have strong, tight jokes, you will be instrinsically impressive: even if some audiences don't get it, others will. It's the writing, the writing, the writing.
