I hate performers that are technically great but have absolutely zero to say with their golden pipes. I also hate vocal gymnastics in ANY song, which is why American Idol drives me absolutely batty. Not a single contestant on the show ever sings a song and just respects the song for its musical qualities, it's always a platform for projecting themselves... which is why I think shows like that are horrible for the evolution of music as an art form.
But really it's whatI should expect from a TV show that is really primarily about the cult of personality more than anything else...
But I digress...
Technical singing talent is pointless when it completely lacks direction, purpose or respect for the art of songwriting and the broader emotional aims of music in general.
I'm not sure what you're talking about. Bob Dylan never aspired to craft a gravelly voice; it just came naturally. Tom Waits' distinct vocal delivery evolved from a stylistic decision and is an integral part of his music. If you think his voice sounRAB terrible, there's not much else to enjoy; you'd be better off just reading the liner notes.

To quote Silver Jews' frontman and presiding genius David Berman, "All my favourite singers can't sing"
Oversinging really does suck though - I am so sick and tired of singers drawing out the end of worRAB into vocal gymnastic demonstrations of their virtuosity. It's damn boring and it just craps all over the intent of the song half the time. It's just a great big showing off session to show how wonderful the artists vocal style is, and it turns music into some sort of sporting competition where listeners expect singers to out sing the last person. It sucks.
Everyone is still having a fit about Kanye West's SNL performance of "Heartless" the other week. Did he lip-synch? Didn't he? The debate misses the bigger issue: Kanye can't sing.
