    If I want to photograph a still life, how far away from the backdrop should...

    ...the still life...? ...items be? Is there a general rule to use so as to get just a nice "bokeh" of the background, fading away into infinity? Like say I want to set a coke can on and in front of a black cloth--a foot away? 6 inches? This is using a Sony Alpha SLR, if that makes a difference.
