I think it's normal, on my E66, the screen is the same, it looks like it's off, but if you shine a light to it, you can read everything on the home screen. I wouldn't worry about it.

Agreed. And does that even take into account the extra 10MB of so that would be taken up by Nokia Messaging and Mail for Exchange? If I can't run these programs as well as the normal phone operations then this is a no go for me. Hopefully they have a decent large screened E-series coming soon.
