I'm going to go against the grain and say 1 was better than 2 if only for Dafoe's amazing baddie character. 2 was good as well although as someone up the thread says, quite a girly chick flick type movie with lots of angsty lovelorn looks and unrequieted love metaphors. Both were very enjoyable...

Just came back from seeing this and I was pleasantly surprised. Not a big fan of period dramas but thought it was great and an interesting storyline.
