    Priming your canvas with acrylic gesso will help a lot. The gesso sinks into the dimples and makes for a smoother surface. I would start out with 2 thin coats of gesso rather than 1 heavy coat.     You can stop using plastic bottles altogether and get a stainless steel one. I don't recommend aluminum because it may cause Alzheimer's. Stainless will last a lifetime.

    Try it, what can it hurt? I would only tint as much as you need, rather than doing the whole jar of gesso, though.
