    Before speaking, I think: "When I married this woman, I promised to love and respect her. Does what I would like to say fall into those categories of 'love' and/or 'respect'?" This has stopped me numerous times from saying something I would wish I could take back.

    It's can also be a Western cultures thing. For example, in Spain it would be rude to point and stare....but staring is absolutely commonplace and not considered to be rude.
